Poor soil

In DF2022, some of my farms state: "poor soil" others poor soil 25% and even some poor soil 33%,
 why (they are next to each other, some above and some underground) ? and how does it affect their use?

how does it affect their use?

It affects crop yield. Expect stack sizes of 1. (I haven't got any legendary growers yet, so I don't know if it gets much better than that.)

It's to encourage people to get into the caverns where they have good soil (as the tooltip actually says).
I notice they moved Giant Cave Spiders down a level to make this somewhat feasible. Still a bit Fun...

Ah, I thought this also impacted surface farming, and not just underground soil farming.

i've only seen "poor soil" when smoothing the mud out from underneath an underground farm plot. in that situation i just re-irrigated and things went back to normal

Perhaps potash might be good investment for some of those embark points that you're not spending on skills any more?
