Elven craftsmanship
« on: August 08, 2006, 04:01:00 pm »

I just started an elven swordsman, and all of my equipment is made out of wood and reeds. This is sort of thematic, but it concerns me. Are elves in DF unable to use iron? Are cedar boots stealthy? Should I have played a bowman instead?

They are...  mega woodsy right now.  If you get to trade with them when you are running a dwarf outpost you will experience it at its fullest.  The sword will be okay, but a bow is probably better for now, as long as you can keep up your supply of arrows by raiding kobs or something.  Once you get some money you can buy a good sword in the human town.

As a general note, once you find some things to sell (equipment of dead friends, some adventure areas have trinkets), and you are talking to a trader, select the things you want to sell and then press [a] to ask for like 9000 dollars.  When you press [t] to trade, the merchant will make a reasonable offer and you can accept it.  This is a hack before bartering goes in.  I didn't want to have one of those up/down/up/down dull bartering systems.  We have some ideas kicking around to try to make it fun, but for  now, you can just get the best possible deal in the way I described.  Buying works similar -- just offer 1 dollar or a crappy trade, and the merchant will adjust if you have enough coins.

It's too bad I don't have a bow. Or any skill with one. I suppose three elven swordspersons can survive until they reach civilization, with its effective, metal swords and difficult quests.
