Pawns, like Dragon's Dogma pawns. They might leap off a cliff spontaneously, beat up random wild animals and bring you loads of random crap they pick up off the ground, but they'd be actually actively helpful.

And they are immortal, you just have to find a warp stone to resummon them after they dive off that cliff.

I guess it depends how long you can stand someone misusing the word "aught" every ten seconds.
