In the very near future, everyone gets forced off the internet and then, a year later, forced back on the internet. Soon after, machine learning cracks cross-species communication.

A year later, VR and AR are in the mainstream, yet bad enough people don't use it all the time.

5 months later, highly limited 'time travel' (truly a form of dimension jumping) is invented.

A year later, advancements in nano-tech give select individuals what amounts to low-level superpowers. 6 months later, robotics goes mass market but as the nano-tech trickles out it doesn't make people as irrelevant as feared.

2 years later, we luck out on AI and get a cool result. With the (limited) advancements it gives us, we simultaneously gain the ability to travel around the Local Fluff (our solar neighbourhood), life extension (a work in progress), and shitty cybernetics and gene editing.

I worked in Aliens, towards the end. Had to leave some time for all the other technologies that are cool for a little bit.

And you can't go too hard on the aliens. A full galaxy of aliens is flat-out overwhelming. 30 species or so at a time imo. Start with the Local Fluff
