Self-Driving World: A United State of Preparation
« on: May 05, 2022, 07:32:09 am »

So, this is 5-10 years away. Radical social overhaul following it. Bears planning for in my opinion.

Any things you know will definitely happen?

That it won't happen 5-10 years from now

Even if self- driving vehicles become much more common 10 years from now, there are a ton of old vehicles that can't do that which aren't going anywhere for many years to come.

I do think self-driving cars will become ubiquitous eventually to point that within a few generations I expect most people won't want to drive manually for a few reasons, but that's going to be more like 50+ years at least.

There will be a lot of disruptions in the freight delivery sector before then though.  I'm curious to see what happens there since it's going to put a lot of people out of work, or at least change their jobs to be just last mile drivers where the computers can't reliably drive on back roads for a long time yet.

Self-driving is one of those technologies that will demand possession. It's a straight-up quality of life spike. Go to bed in your garage, wake up on a beach. You can't pass that up.

You'll see an increase in important people's cars suddenly crashing, having their brakes disabled, etc.. If compost really hits the radiator, expect to go to your car only to find that it's been kill-switched.

The change over from gasoline to electric is far more likely in 5-10 years. The AI replacing human drivers will take longer, I wager.

And make no mistake about it. If AI can operate a vehicle significantly safer than a person, humans WILL be barred from driving, in most cases.

But consider: An AI driving the car is PART of the car, making the manufacturer liable for the accident. No more blaming the human drivers. So ...Auto Manufacturers probably do NOT want self-driving cars. So yeah, 50 years sounds about right.

When the technology is saying 5-10, it really is 5-10 when it's this sexy.

Japan had overnight buses- crawl up to the bus stop at 11PM, get off the bus at 7am a fair ways across the country.

Still ran you like forty bucks a trip, and you're never gonna sleep comfortably enough like that. Didn't radically change society, that one.
