Dwarfs not dumping items fast enough
« on: March 12, 2022, 04:53:32 pm »

Is there a way to get dwarfs to place a higher priority on dumping items?  I had a tragic breakdown of law and order recently, resulting in many corpses and body parts being strewn throughout my fortress.  This was some time ago, but most of the carnage still hasn't been cleaned up, even though I have plenty of little dump zones set up.

You can't increase their priority but you can decrease the number of other jobs by suspending most workshop orders and setting a few main stockpiles to Take From Links Only, so they stop creating hauling orders.

Also, check the dwarfs that are doing Dump orders; sometimes they dump items in a distant dump zone instead of the nearest one, which slows the cleaning. Because of this, I usually use stockpiles to clean up and only keep one active Dump zone in the fort.

Sometimes severed limbs fly into impassible workshop tiles, so dwarfs ignore the item until you dismantle the workshop.

There is something to be said about, if the stakes are as high, maybe reconsider your certitudes. One has to be aggressively allistic to feel entitled to be able to trust. But it won't happen to me, my bit doesn't count etc etc... Just saying, after my recent experiences I couldn't trust the public if I wanted to. People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.

mass dump designation should only be performed when the fortress is fairly happy and not chugging through any major hauling tasks. Dumping seems to take a much lower prio than basic hauling, or socializing, so I suggest eliminating those distractions as much as possible.

I continue to think that having a designated class of hauling-only dwarves is necessary for the timely completion of any large projects.

edit: you mention 'dump zones', and if you are designating large patches of ground via the 'i' key as dumps, that is not the most effective way to clean up after a battle. You want to designate a single tile of 'dumping zone' at the edge of a pit or cliff. Now, every time you designate an item for dumping, the dwarves will pick it up and carry it to the edge and THROW it down, effectively creating a quantum stockpile of refuse.

if you do, however, want to amass large fields of dead things, use a custom corpse / refuse stockpile to collect everything related to battle refuse in one spot.

I tend to turn a number of the least useful citizens to be basically full time haulers by disabling most or all other jobs.
