You know, this thread is inspiring me to make a space mod. It would require food reactions that don't need a farm(Can't farm on constructed tiles) and some way of making an invisible support. But other than that, you could build a orbital doom laser. Of course it would just be constructions that you release to make a cave-in, but this could be interesting.

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

Whats bugging me now is that I can't engrave the fort's walls or floors

..Why not just find a mountainous area, then dig out all but a few of the mountain tiles and build your fort around it.  Voila, instant in-the-sky farmable (once muddied) land!

the space station would require a magma core ---- mine out a shell of lava and build a station around it...

Well, the goal is to have it completely self-sufficient with NO contact to the land. So, I need it to all be artificial.

Zironic, if you get that mod working or anything, PM me I'd LOVE to try it.

But when muddied constructed tiles can be farmed upon. I just checked not 20 minutes ago.(after I saw this topic, which is entirely beside the point.)  :)

IF you use your immigrants to supply your main floating fort, perhaps you could use the waterzooka. Pump water halfway up to your main fort, build some channels for the water and use it to propel anything you need up into the fort. I'm not sure if this works, but if it doesn't, you could use a dwarf that's hauling whatever you need.

Example:

code:

#######
#     #
#     ########
#   # #~~~~~~#
#   D ######~#
#####H#    #~#
  D==#    #~#
#####G######H#
   #        #
   ##########

G - Grates
D - Door
X - Floodgate
H - Hatch
= - Garbage dump zone
# - Wall/Floor
 - Anything

Heh, actually I think that would be awesome, but rather than mine out a shell, pump it upwards. If you make it the tower large enough you can grow trees on top. Just build in a map with towering peaks, pump water on top of the presumably stone area, and badda boom. Trees pop up like in about a season or so and with careful cultivating you can have a self replenishing stock. Also, farms.

code:

   TTFTTFTT_____Td#
  O#FFFFFFFF#   #_/#
  O#FsFsFsFs#   #\_#
  O#KKKKKKKK#   #_/#
  O#NqNqNqNq#   #\_#
  O#RRRRRRRR#   #_/#

#  O#SpSpSpSp#   ########
#  O#SpSpSpSp#   ########
#  O#McMcMcMc#   ########
#   ##########   ########
#                ########
#MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM#######
########################

T - Tree
Td - Trade Depot
Fs - Food stockpile
K - Kitchen
Nq - Noble quarters
R - Rooms
Ws - Workshops
M - Magma
SP - Miscellaneous Stockpile
Mc - Master Control room containing a miniature living area with more than enough supplies to feed the 2-3 control dwarves. When they aren't doing anything give them screw-pumps to pump, once they're legendary, have them spar (dropping weapons into their little bay. once they make legendary whatever, have them rejoin the upper eschelon's of society as squad leaders and replace them with skill-less peasents. Rinse, repeat.
# - Wall/Stone
__ - Raising Bridge
#_/# - ramp in the depot tower for trading.
O - A method of transporting supplies from the upper levels of the fortress to the lower levels, just have a dwarf or two occupying the master control room at all times. Throwing food and booze into it periodically. A chute system of bridges which retract after you have placed whatever items you want moved, dumped on top of them. (I would recommend some lockable doors to prevent mishaps) Here is a top down perspective

code:

###### After switch is pulled ######  to the level 3z below ######
#RbRb#                        #EaEa#                        #RbRb#
DRFRb#                        DEaEa#      F---->            DRFRb#
#RbRb#                        #EaEa#                        #RbRb#
######                        ######                        ######

Rb - Retractable bridge
RF - Bridge Tile with food on it, dumped there.
Ea - Empty Air
D - Door

Yeah... I'm about to head off and do this now... I spent way too much time thinking about it. Take all of this with a grain of salt, as getting the magma up there would be incredibly difficult, though not impossible. Also, it maybe be possible to hold up the tower with only 3-4 steel supports, depending how deep you want it to be and if you want it to be filled with magma... Just pitching idea's here.

This actually works without cave ins turned off. I did this over a cliff above a lake, as long as a single floor tile is connectd to the cliff edge the whole fortress stays up. I understand this isnt a "true"flying fortress but it is nearly as good, and highyl defendable.

And what became of this fort? I made a doomsday lever attached to a bridge attached to the cliff edge. It hasnt been pulled............yet
