Yeti breeding
« on: March 31, 2021, 09:50:50 am »

I've caught myself a breeding pair of yetis. They're both heterosexual and I've had them loose in a 3x3 room together for almost 4 years now. Before that they spent a couple of years chained up together. In all this time there have been no babies born.
The wiki says they're not sentient so they shouldn't need to marry in order to reproduce.

Has anyone had any success with breeding non-tameable animals in version 0.47.XX?

Maybe one of them got inadvertently gelded in combat before you caught them.

I don't think any of them are gelded. None of them show any wounds.
Anyway, I've tried moving all 4 of my yetis (1 female, 3 males) into a room together so I'll see if that helps.

I expect it was through cage traps. Wonderful things, cage traps.

by cracking into the second cavern layer before the number of undead there reaches more than 100 and hoping there is still rutherer and jabberer populations alive. i didn't do it in time and had to flood my entire second layer with magma

The yetis were caught over a period of many years by having a single cage trap on the surface just outside the walls of my fort. Due to the way pathing works it helps to put it right up against the wall and near to a corner. You can also put cage traps at choke-points in the caverns to catch lots of underground wildlife.
For war animals I recommend just trading regularly with the elves. If you buy all the good war-trainable animals each time, eventually you'll end up with a breeding pair. My current fort has a rather large number of tame lions thanks to the elves.
Or you could try raiding various sites with the "steal livestock" option enabled.

You can also make trap walls or trap channels where you put cage traps in a gap. I learned that from Unreal World. One of the first things I do when I start a fort is dig a channel in the dirt to try to control where animals wander.

Hey, after combing through the wiki, I have found a possible explaination. According to research somewhat confirmed by toady, there is a roughly 5% chance that your female yeti is either homosexual or asexual, thereby preventing breeding. Gotta love this game!

of cause, there is also a 0.05^3 chance that all your males are homo/asexual, but I think we can disregard that... possibility...

The opening post already confirmed the yetis are not homosexual (presumably using DF Hack)
