Why can't we have crates to store stones in?
« on: May 28, 2021, 03:40:18 pm »

We already have Bins for small items, why can't we have crates for large items?

I don't like having to deal with the stone clutter by dumping it all in a quantum stockpile.

We need crates, toady.

You know you can store five stones in a minecart, right?

Because they represent massive boulders, the remaining stone from hollowing out four whole tiles, and only take up one tile in space in a warehouse already.  Boulders don't fit in bins because they're too big to cram into smaller spaces.

In fact, it makes more sense that you would have to work harder to dispose of stone, being forced to turn them all into walls someplace, slowing dwarves' stupidly-fast vaporization of stone down and making expansion less ridiculously easy.  It's absurd that building a fort on the surface is a "challenge" while excavating straight to the magma sea is effortless.  Making mining slower and require more logistics (including, hopefully, needing to vent air all the way down to your mineshafts) will make players actually have to strategize more around how they expand, and make getting to the depths something to build up towards again, rather than something a player effortlessly does the instant they embark.

And yet, a minecart can hold five of them…

Stone management is a frequent topic of concern for players. That’s why we see so many different ways to handle it. You can just hide the stones if you don’t want to see them. There are already physics-defying ways of managing stone, like quantum stockpiles.

Outside the vanilla game, there are also lots of mods that advertise stone management experience improvements. I’m the end, the answer to the OP question is that mega sized bins are already possible with some very simple modding, so it’s really not true that we “can’t” have such things. It makes just as much sense as a sperm whale and a gnat both being the same size (1 tile) so if it doesn’t bug you, you should absolutely spend a few minutes learning how to mod, to give yourself the stone storing crates of your dreams.
