SOME squad members aren't training
« on: April 24, 2021, 06:47:19 am »

I have a squad of 10 dwarves with the same equipment. Three of them have reached double-digit skill levels and spar all the time. The other seven are at level 0 or 1, and some are even rusty in most of their combat skills. They have all their equipment, and they are standing in the barracks with the job "Training Session," but their skills haven't budged in about a year. What could be wrong that affects just some of the dwarves in a squad? Is this a bug? I have other squads, and they are working normally.

(I've been playing for a while, so I mostly know what I'm doing. This is DF 0.47.05.)

Sometimes a squad's group training session will be delayed for weeks because one dwarf is trapped somewhere, but for a specific 7 dwarfs to not gain while 3 dwarfs gain 5+ skill ranks...I have not seen that.

- In the 'm' 's' screen for that squad, is the squad using a default 'Train 10' order?
- Is the barracks unusual, maybe there is a wall though the middle blocking line-of-sight?
- Does this squad have multiple barrack locations?
- Have you tried "rebuilding/reassigning" the barracks or the squad orders?

There is something to be said about, if the stakes are as high, maybe reconsider your certitudes. One has to be aggressively allistic to feel entitled to be able to trust. But it won't happen to me, my bit doesn't count etc etc... Just saying, after my recent experiences I couldn't trust the public if I wanted to. - Yes
- No
- No
- Yes

I disbanded the squad and put the misbehaving dwarves in another squad. It helped some of them, but a few of them still didn't train. Eventually, I got some migrants and just took the broken ones out of the military entirely. Not really a satisfactory solution, but my squads are training now.

Would smaller units work?  I heard the most effective size of a squad is three.

It might.

From observation, I know what happens with Demonstrations and Sparring jobs, but am less certain what the group members can do during the "Training Session" job. Maybe "Training Session" is always two sparring dwarves being watched by the others in the group, but there might be other ways the group interacts. It might be that his seven "bad" dwarfs all dislike duty, martial training, poor concentration, and are lazy as dwarfs can get, so they do not learn from watching, and putting them in squads of 3 might force them to spar and "the school of hard knocks" might teach them something.
