Can someone verify this?
« on: July 29, 2012, 12:45:03 pm »

http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2012:Dwarves#Adventure_mode

"although player-made fortresses that have been abandoned can attract Dwarf NPCs that will settle down in it."

Is this true? I just got back into DF again and went reading through the wiki after playing a couple forts. That line caught my eye and I was wondering if it is possible.

I know that they will sometimes settle in fortresses that were abandoned or "emptied" during world generation, sometimes repeatedly over a short amount of time. I would suspect given enough time that they might settle an abandoned player fortress too, but it could take 10, 20, 30 or more years depending on your map, so I would think its unlikely but possible.

I'm not sure about now, but once Toady puts in reclaimation and repopulation in place, I could easily see this happening, it would be awesome to have a lost fort end up with a whole new crowd by the time you got back to reclaiming it.

I once had a Fortress that I just abandoned after like 40 minutes because I don't play Fortress mode too much, and went looking through Legends for it. It showed me how all the people fled into the surrounding region and after that I saw "In 160, the Lined Sabres was formed in <fortress name>."

So yeah, I guess it's possible

I don't think thats what it refers to, the  "In 160, the Lined Sabres was formed in <fortress name>." thing refers to the dwarves that were in the fortress when it was abandonned, they form their own group and mill around the fortress remains until you make a new fortress and they enter the pool of dwarves that you can get through migration waves.

I think what Kie meant was that dwarves that were outside the fortress moving to it in a way that people move from site to site normally, simply treating it like any other site, but I could be wrong.

Oh, and the dwarves that mill around the fortress, if they're still there when you reclaim the site, they will be treated as "friendly", rather than members of your fortress, and they cant be chosen as migrants, seeing as how they are already there, making them rather useless.

Lol, that reminds me. Once I went to a previously abandoned fort and saw 3-6 dwarves there and 2 horses. I then proceeded to kill all of them.

Oh, we've all been there, good times.
