Hunting and war dogs

What is the difference? I only train war dogs, and chain them and assign them to soldiers and hunters. Are hunting dogs better at hunting stuff, or what?

[Healthcare Update Thread] Personally, I can't wait for doctors to get possessed and start surgically attaching axes to champion soldier's arms.

hunting dogs tend to run ahead of their masters and get killed.  War dogs tend to be more defensive.  Hunting don't really do much at all in the way of hunting.  I usually train only war dogs.

oh and this belongs in gameplay questions.

Hunting dogs are fast, war dogs are strong.
Second on the wrong forum.

Wait, what is the Dwarf mode forum? I thought it was meant for fortress mode talk.

Also, thanks for answering my question.
