What happens to artifacts sold to a caravan

If, in fortress mode, I were to sell a series of artifacts to any civilizations caravans, do these items actually end up somewhere in the world? Or do they at that point become un-recoverable? I'm curious if sold artifacts could be recovered in adventure mode

I believe that they will end up in one of the sites of the civilization you sold the to

Artifacts are supposed to be indestructable. Even so far as atom smashing an artifact will have it return if you retire the fort and visit as an adventurer.

That said, its buggy. An artifact might end up at some other site related to the civ, or be stuck in someones inventory somewhere, or just sort of disappear indefinitely.
