McUrist slowly dying, help a guy out?
« on: January 16, 2021, 05:44:39 pm »

So, this Dorf was in a battle some time ago, in which he lost the ability to grasp. I thought he'd just be patched up, right? Well, I guess not, because I see the poor guy not able to drink. It's definitely the cause, but for some reason, he won't go to the hospital. Or the game thinks he is healed. Either way, while McUrist isn't too important, I would hate to see him die so pathetically. What can I do? He's received dressings everywhere needed, including both of the hands.

If his motor nerves have been severed there is no more healing that can be done, as those can't be repaired. As you've noted, dorfs are too stupid to figure out how to drink without any working hand, so you've got some trouble.

Dorfs without the grasping ability will, stupidly, grab a mug and then sit on a barrel trying to figure out how to fill it, until dying of thirst. However, if there are no mugs available anywhere, they can drink directly from the barrel (lie under the tap or something). Note that it's a major pain to get rid of all available mugs every time that dorf need a drink, although it can be done.

One solution is to retire the dorf to a hillock, and another would be to isolate him in a location where no mugs are ever brought. This would probably mean delivery of booze, food, and clothing through a blocked off minecart route, with no path for dorfs. A third solution is to completely forbid mugs in the fortress, although it might be OK to allocate all of them to the tavern (if the tavern is staffed all of the staff will push booze down the throats of patrons, but I don't know if that works on grasp-less ones. Also note that staffed taverns with mugs have some side effects).

You could send him off on a military directive to harrass a particularly large creature for a honorable death or to least break their legs so they spend some time in the hospital for pernament residency there after getting diagnosed for that hand. A life well looked after but on water ought to finish them off to a ignoble end.

That is unless you set up a tavern in the middle of the hospital to deal with these needs & some allocated private entertainment to keep them sane. I dont think they can pray from the bedside though but maybe some visits from loved ones could be orchestrated from the tavern socialization.

Go mix and match your location zones, he's not going anywhere. Give him a legendary diploma in all doctrines of cheese making via the cheese maker guild sitting through their repetitive talks. Personal sermons via priests, racy human dancers, angry dwarven housewives filing for divorce from a dwarf who hasn't moved out of their hospital bed in 40 years.

there are methods to remove a dwarfs need for food and drink entirely.
- One method lets him heal every full moon..
- The same method with a different outcome let him be able to drink without his hands. but also without booze..
- One method removes all his needs, including his hunger

Oh and maybe you can cage him up to let other dwarfs feed him, but that wont make it prettier for him.

Do you have holdings, maybe ? Maybe you can send him there ? Else, exiling will cause bad thoughts to his friends, but not worse than seeing him slowly rot away.
Another solution is, like PatrickLundell said, to lock him up in a burrow with enough alcohol and food to survive...

But yeah, it's hard to be productive when life takes both your hands
