Military Uniform tied to dwarf OR squad position
« on: October 02, 2020, 01:04:47 pm »

Toady, please add an option (when you get to redoing the military) so we can choose to have a dwarf's uniform follow them no matter what squad or squad position they are moved to.  In other words, let us choose for each squad position AND for each dwarf, whether the uniform is tied to the position or the dwarf.

This would be wonderful, especially when dwarves name their weapons (or are given artifacts) and then are transferred to a different squad or moved to a new position in their squad.

I've found assigning specific weapons and armor for each dwarf (although tedious) works great, and they pick up their gear quickly. This also avoids the reshuffling caused by the "pecking order" when a new, higher quality piece of gear is forged/made.

The option suggested above would be absolutely, positively wonderful when switching a dwarf with specific weapons and armor to a different squad.  Right now to do that and have them keep their gear, you have to do these steps, not sure if the order can be different:

- make sure the "new" squad's position has no uniform assigned
- move the dwarf to that new position
- unassign all the uniform's specific weapons and armor in their old position
- reassign the dwarf's new uniform piece by piece in their new position*

*And it's hard to know if you're getting all the right weapons and armor reassigned.

You can at the moment make a uniform, name it after your dwarf and then just assign it to the new position each time the dwarf moves. But maybe this doesn't work for specific items? I forget, don't usually micromanage that far.

Ah, I had tried that once upon a time and don't remember if it works with the specific items either.  It's something to try and then see if it's less tedious to do that 70 times or deal with my existing method.  Thanks for the reminder.

Hmm, I wonder if there's a limit to the number of uniforms...

Don't forget to record a macro when you set up all your uniforms. Then all you have to do is set in running at the start of each game. Saves a lot of time.

Well, bad news. We can't create a uniform for specific items at all, macro or no macro.

- Creating uniforms is done in the m-n screen, and specific items can't be assigned there, only type & material.

- Assigning specific items is in the m-e screen, and you can't save uniforms there.
Even if you could, a macro wouldn't work because specific items don't appear in the same list position each time.

The wiki info implies that there is significantly different code for named-artifacts than for mood-artifacts.

What happens if you have one uniform that uses "individual choice, weapon"? Those named-artifacts may not behave the same as mood-artifacts in this situation, and the dwarf who named it may be the only one that can choose it using a uniform of this type.

So here's the situation now in my fort that would benefit enormously from the o.p. suggestion:

I want to split several well-established squads of 7-10 members into "half-size" squads of 3-5 members.
Two reasons to do this:
1) Smaller squads of archers to station in various towers where only a few are needed in each tower. (Yes, this can be done tediously by ordering each dwarf individually, but it's cumbersome).
2) Split the axe, hammer, sword, spear, mace squads in half to add newbies into them so they can train with the veterans, or for the same reason as 1) to station them in many areas of my sprawling fort.

The o.p. suggestion in important because each military dwarf has each uniform item specified (e.g., rather than just "helm", they have "+iron helm+" and so on).  If I split 1/2 of each squad into a new squad then I've got to go through all that again for them AND there is no way to get each dwarf to have the same equipment they have now when they move.

Aside from the tedium involved, in particular this is a problem when a dwarf has partially named a shield or weapon and they end up with a different one in the new squad.

Please help me Toady, before my already graying hair turns completely white from the stress!
