(Wrong thread? I don't think your reply was in response to anything of the large and unedited quoting. BICBW, so apologies if I missed it.)
I don't know how quote less text or my browser just not work with this.

...if you'll forgive me going even more meta:

I don't know how quote less text or my browser just not work with this.
1) Click quote.

2) Edit bits between the prior

markers in any sensible, sane and honest way you wish (ideally).

3) Pay attention to nested quotings so that you don't mess up who said what.

4) Feel free to split quotes (insert "...
Newtext!
..." to address intermediate points, and make it more obvious what you're commenting about.

5) If I remove large bits from the middle of a paragraph of drawl, for whatever reason, I find "[...]" (not tagging, just a handily obvious ellipsis) indicates editing in a clearly transparent way.  Perhaps an "edit: comment inserted - signed" can be used to add a little.

6) ...though strikethroughs/italics/bolds/colour-changes echoed or by a FTFY ("Fixed That For You") is often an acceptible deliberately-jokey thing to do.

...) Still not sure where coin-pouches/economic issues are directly relevent to worm-digging, except extremely tangentially/secantly related to destruction of 'valuable' engravings. But good luck with that.

Worms are simple to do. They find their path as just swimmers, but swim in rock.

They aren't pathing through rock, they are just mindlessly eating. The rock itself if their goal, once it's eaten they path forward to the next yummy rock. Have them deviate from straight paths at some percentage, turn towards any viable rock when they hit something they can't bore through, eat a stone at some very slow speed and spawn infrequently. The point would be to make caverns more dynamic and unpredictable, that forgotten beast that couldn't reach your part of the caverns for 20 years could suddenly be given a path.

I've had about 5 giant earthworms in the 20 years of my current fort and most of my old forts I never saw one. So eating the map away is not a concern. They should still originate from the caverns and therefore be easy to proactively track down and kill anyway.

History is lost all the time, if your engravings are precious defend them. The game's not going to be simulating worms eating paths through forts that aren't active and loaded.

Well, there's a degree of disorder applied to abandoned sites, so I'm not sure this wouldn't (post-facto, pre-reclaim/-rediscover) be simulated if that little extra amount of spiciness could be considered interesting...

(I give it as a mere possibility, if we go the full 'disruptive breachers of Fortress" mode. Some low chance/quantity of disturbance applied proportional the time any site is out of control of any player or assumedly attentive NPC garrison of whatever kind. 'Patched' walls may be something seemlessly inflicted upon manned/dwarved settlements when the RNG demands it.)

History is lost all the time, if your engravings are precious defend them.

Defend them how exactly?  With your ghost-dwarves that can attack solid creatures through stone?  If these creatures are burrowing through stone all the time, there's no way to attack them, and if you want to do something like creating air spaces between the outside world and your fortess except for a single tile of support, you're just setting yourself up for a cave-in of your whole fortress if the worms DO delete that tile of stone.

Again, if you're not going to have the "earth glide" treatment, you're just creating a fountain with no sink.

The game's not going to be simulating worms eating paths through forts that aren't active and loaded.

Well, it should approximate their effects if there are worms eating stone all the time throughout the world, or else worldgen isn't doing its job.  What you're holding up as a solution is something that is a problem that needs addressing.

By looking at the units screen and killing them.
