Dwarf Fortress fanfiction.

They are coming.

They are coming to destroy all that we have built here.

The younger dwarves are fools. They talk about how the arrival is a good thing, about how it will make our lives easier. They do not understand.

We have prepared as best we can, now all we can do, is wait and pray that it is enough.

Even now I can see them through the windows off my guardhouse, charging towards the fort like a living sea of flesh and hair, mouths gaping open as if they would devour all within.

God I hate migrants.

The above resulted when it occurred to me that migrants in Dwarf Fortress bear more resemblance to an invading army then a peaceful migration. It’s short, but I hope it amused you.

Too bad there isn't a way to block immigration without also blocking the Humans and Elves...

Kill enough and they'll stop coming. Figured that out the hard way, was killing all the nobles and the regular immigrants stopped coming.

Damn nobles still show up every spring, though.

I like migrants normally. But when you get 25 showing up in the fall of your first year, that IS an invading army! Or having 6 or more nobles showing up at one time. I havent locked any out yet, but damn I've been tempted to!

The Battle at the Bridge.

You can call me Mafol. I was there when it happened. I was bringing some lumber in from outside, and had just gotten to the bridge, when a cave crocidile came out of nowhere and grabbed a pup a bit downstream of the bridge. The pup never knew what hit it. It then turned and start up the shorline towards the bridge. With all the traffic on the bridge, I could barely move, so I thought my time had come.

But an off duty crossbowdwarf just happened to step onto the other end of the bridge, and saw the croc coming.

With remarkable speed, he lifted his crossbow and fired.

The shot was amazing! firing thru several dwarves without hitting them, he pegged the croc thru its right forarm, and right thru both of its eyes! I swear by my beard!

Thr croc was stunned of course, and stopped moving for a moment. And after that first shot, I was sure the next would end the crocs days, and put some needed meat in the stocks.

Sadly tho, such was not to be. It must have been pure beginner's luck, as the bowdwarf fired ten more shots, without even coming close to hitting the beast. If not for a passing hunter, I fear the bowdwarf would still be there shooting at it. But by the time the hunter came along, the croc had gotten back to the water. The hunter fired twice, and easily ended the beast. But the beast's remains floated away down the river, and was lost to the darkness. Oh well, good thing I like plump helmets a lot!

[ Based on a real incident. ]

You know, ever since I started bringing a dedicated carpenter, herbalist, brewer, and cook along with me to every new fortress, immigrants have been a boon instead of a curse.  I have more than enough food to feed them, and the new hands can actually start getting things done besides making barrels/beer/roasts.

I like the story side of things. Thats part of why I became a D&D DM long ago. And games like this I like, because they are like an interactive story as it unfolds.

Dont have any other DF stories yet tho. (I have some from D&D, but then I played that a lot longer than I have been playing DF so far. But those stories would be off topic here.) There have been different incidents, but most dont make stories worth telling. But the one I posted actually happened. All I had to do was tell it from a passer-by's point of view.

If I come accross any more, I'll be sure to post them. And I'd love to read any posted by others. Maybe even get a fan fic catagory going!  :) I bet I could come up with a few more if the idea catches on.

The following is an account of the last actions of one Ast Etagkeskal.

on the 20th of timber in the late autumn of the year 1060 Ast Etagkeskal was taken by a mood. Some may say he was spoken to by a god others say he was a little off to begin with but none the less Ast sealed himself up in the masonary workshop of the fledgeling fortress of Shedimkeskal "ShadowShoot" and from that point was consumed with his masterwork.

Tirelessly without pause Ast worked for two days straight. On the morning of the 22nd Ast went mad and in the process of destroying whatever he was working on he exploded. True story.

It happened at the beggining of our first Autumn in this new Fortress.

We set a provisory encampment at the entrance of the escavation site, hoping to establish a settlement after the cave river. But before this we had to assure enough food for the harsh winter, as the snow already was fallen from the sky, so we built a small farm besides. I, as the dwarf with the necessary skill, started to work at the fields.
Some nights ago, everybody but I and our poor miner was sleeping at the encampment. He was bring some rocks to the mining pile outside, and I was going to sleep at the ground. But then I heared some noises, and went to the tunnel.
As I reach the tunnel, I saw the miner at the ground, with his hands at his bleeding throat, agonizing from the mortal wound. Besides him two of the kittens, rippee apart, and in the darkness fo the tunnel, two menacing red eyes.
I am no warrior, then I turn to outside shouting for help, but the thing grab my back and threw me at the ground. It was a little devil, a Gremlin! The pointed white teeth of the monster started to tearing my flesh apart, until the time when my loyal dog jumped at him.
Almost unconscious, I only could hope my dog could leave the fight alive - and he did. He teared the gremlin apart, saved my life and of my others fellow dwarves.
Now I am writing this at my new bedroom, with two broken legs and a bady mauled back, but soon I will recover. And then I will finally see the engraving that tell the history of my brave little dog.

(Forgive my  errors, I think this is the longest english text I ever wrote  :)
