Ice layer > stone layer connections?
« on: February 27, 2008, 10:05:00 pm »

ARGHRAGHARGHRGHAGRH.

What is the trick? There surely is one.

My dwarves never fail to stop their stair digging when they hit the stone layer. This is.. baffling. If I K over that tile, it says, <stone> floor. They WILL NOT dig any more stairs. Someone told me something about digging ramps but I'll be damned if I can figure out what they're supposed to do, since you can't dig downward ramps, only up.

never tried a fortress with permanent ice.

On ramps: designate upwards ramp on the level below and your miners will dig it from above n/p.

Yes, that definitely is not working here. Because, you see, I cannot GET to the stone layer to build the ramp up. -.-

The thing is, the last stair you try to dig in the ice (which would allow you access to the stone layer) vanishes as soon as it is completed.  I think it melts instantly or something.

Aee if you can construct a stairway underneath your dug-out stair.  If that doesn't work, I've forgotten how I managed to do it, so you're a little short on luck.

Try digging the ramp in the ice layer directly above the stone layer, so it will grant you access to the stone floor.  Once you're on the ftone floor, it's just like digging into any other stone.

I'm pretty sure Kagus is correct and the problem is your ice stairs are melting. constructing a stairway out of wood or something should work, and if not I think the ramp thing is what I did.

Still no dice. I could REALLY use a code-tag display; someone willing to start a quick glacier fort and do this? I'll get it up on the wiki afterwards. I know I'm just overlooking something basic. No amount of creative digging will allow me access to the stone layer.
