Dwarves will push but not guide minecarts
« on: September 16, 2020, 02:33:49 am »

Its been a while since I actually did anything with minecarts, at least 2 years, and I remembered that you can train dwarves by having them push a minecart and I remember that the last time I did it the plan worked pretty well.

I carved out a loop track, added a route and a stop, assigned a cart, set the instruction to always "guide north immediate always". A moment later one of my idlers comes over steps on the cart and leaves, doing nothing. After 5 or 6 repeats of nothing I though something was wrong and set it to "push" instead of "guide" and it works as intended.

I tried putting in a stop, nothing, I tried putting in 2 stops, nothing. I tried messing with the conditions of the cart having the dwarves fill it up and then move it but nothing seems to work. Anyone know how to get this working? Or if it guiding carts around even has an affect on physique anymore.

edit: for anyone who gets the same issue, problem was that I was building (b<C<S) track stops but it required a second designated stop (h<s)

A dwarf won't guide a minecart unless he sees a continuous track to the next stop. Maybe there's a break in the track somewhere.

It sound like the dorf walk there to guide the cart, only to find that it's already at the destination if it's an unbroken loop, and so leaves after accomplishing the mission. If that's the case, you'd likely have to add another stop along the way to give the dorfs somewhere to guide the cart (I've never used guided carts myself, but always push with impulse ramps. Also I would have thought screw pumps would be an easier way to train dorfs, although I've never bothered to use those for training either).
