Plants hint underlying Geology
« on: September 18, 2020, 09:02:10 pm »

More some kind of minor flavor suggestion when everything else is done. Probably a lot of work for almost no one noticing.

As far as I know scouting for minerals can be done by looking at the plants that grow in an area and how they grow. One could search for certain metals / minerals in Adventure mode that way.

Oh, that would be nice for when Toady's much mused upon links between Adventurer and Fortress and introduced. Fortress Mode itself gets a magic scanner, but being able to bring along (go and find, train up, etc) a specialist to give more accurate readings on a possible fort site would be very cool.

Soil having more influence for farming is a good idea, so that some plants are best for some soils and not other and that some soils are more fertile than others.

There's a huge, huge suggestion thread on farming that covers pretty much everything you can think of in that regard. Toady mentions it from time to time since he reads all these threads.

This suggestion is about something different.

If I wasn't clear enough, it's about certain natural plants growing in certain area, their foliage color or earlier foliage turning to autumn colors can hint to certain ores / minerals in the ground. It would be a visible indicator for players. It has nothing to do with farming, as most indicators of a huge ore deposit in the ground seem to cripple plant growth.
