Farm Job Issue
« on: August 09, 2020, 01:16:46 pm »

I just noticed that if there is a field set to plant Quarry Bushes, but there are no Rock Nuts, anyone with the farming labor enabled will not do anything.  Digging, placing a memorial slab, masonry tasks, all resumed as soon as farming was disabled on those dwarves.

I wanted to keep farming enabled for when more seeds become available, but not at this cost.  Is there a way around this?

I don't recognize that problem (although I don't farm quarry bush, but all booze producing plants). If I don't have seeds that field just won't be planted. However, if you do have seeds but they're tied up in a bag in a barrel (I have seeds in bags, but not barrels), you're probably going to get some heavy cancellation spam getting at them. Note, though, that I use single tile fields, so there might be something going on when having some seeds but not enough.

Single-tile fields as a normal way of farming is a new one for me.
I'm curious why you do that and what the benefits are, it sounds interesting.

I've been clued in to "no barrels" in seed stockpiles for some time.

I'm not sure how job assignment really works, but I think that has something to do with it.  I have 1 dwarf as the designated farmer, and he now sometimes plants plump helmets, but then idles around with no job, despite more seeds being available to plant.  Seeds are scattered about loosely on tables, and in the still.

Not knowing any better, I think there's some sort of built in dwarven laziness code that prevents them from just doing jobs all the time, but requires them to sit idle with "no job" for a time before taking other work?

Still seems to be also tied to farming though.  The same farmer will not pull a lever 1 tile away, despite "no job" unless the pull lever task is upgraded to "nDo task now!", but will freely pull it when farming is disabled.

Normally, I have many dwarves, and don't care if the farmers are idling.  There's generally plenty of farm work to be done so idle time is minimized.  In this fort however, there are just 3 dwarves, so I'm trying to have the farmer multi-task a bit.

You have only one farmer, so check if he is an extremely lazy dwarf...

The problem does sound more like a bug or a result of player-chosen settings. Is he moving around or stationary when he is idle? If stationary, does he idle at the same tile, even after a "pulling the lever!" job?

Are many or all of the available seeds TSK'ed? On the 'j'ob menu, is there a "put item in bag" job with 'j'ob details showing many seeds to put in a bag?

Are any burrows active?

There is something to be said about, if the stakes are as high, maybe reconsider your certitudes. One has to be aggressively allistic to feel entitled to be able to trust. But it won't happen to me, my bit doesn't count etc etc... Just saying, after my recent experiences I couldn't trust the public if I wanted to. People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.

Dorfs are blocked from taking up jobs for about 10 tiles worth of walking before taking up a new job (and that blasted walking can take the buggers out of burrows...). Otherwise, look for TSK flags on the seeds, as mentioned. If the seeds are allocated to be hauled to a seed stockpile and/or stored in bags they're not available for planting.

The reason I do single tile farming is simple: I farm every booze producing plant, as well as ones dorfs have preferences for, and the massive amount of over production is somewhat kept in check with single tiles that are toggled on and off as needed on a yearly basis (by a script).
