No access to..
« on: July 22, 2020, 08:12:38 am »

This is confusing me, the mines have just come through and dug out the room, then I try to place tables, chairs beds etc and I get 'No access to..'

The miners have just been there how can there not be access?

Many thanks

It means that the path has been cut between where  the furniture is and where you want to put it. Trace along the route that you think the furniture should be carried, and you'll find something like a broken ramp, a locked door, or a missing staircase. This can happen very easily when you're doing lots of digging and building.

Edit: If the break in the path isn't obvious, trying building the furniture in different locations to map out the areas that are accessible and inaccessible.

It was my staircase!! the miners built going down but couldnt get back up it, I had no idea how to fix it. In the end I built a ramp down to the next level of the stairs.

You can both build and construct staircases. It's not uncommon to have miners strand themselves because they've dug away the ramp/stair connecting them to the rest of the fortress, and in that case you can order them to build an Up staircase to connect to a Down staircase on the level above (but ensure the Construction job is enabled on miners if you disable all the hauling type jobs on them to keep them doing their job).

Staircases can be a bit confusing, but in general every down stair needs to be paired with an up stair below it, and every up stair needs a down stair above it. Up/down stairs just function as both an up and down stair in a single tile. A single up stair or down stair on its own is almost* useless.

*Technically a down stair above an empty space allows liquids and falling items to fall through, even if dwarves can't use it. Flying creatures can also come up through an unconnected down stair.

Yep stairs left me very confused to start with. But the logic has now sunk in :)
