Visitors getting stuck in my footwash pond?
« on: June 06, 2020, 02:46:24 pm »

Pretty simple, this seems to happen more often with humans, I've only had one dwarf visitor get stuck this way.

I have a very simple footwasher for dwarves entering the fort, just your typical channel with 3 depth, no-flow water. It is 2x3, right in the main trap hall, and entirely composed of ramps as a result. I THINK that the visitors are getting stuck on either the ramp itself or specifically submerged ramps, but I can't 100% tell. Removing the offending ramp sometimes sets them free, sometimes the water level has to be lowered to 2 (not sure why visitors wouldn't play nice with 3-depth)

Anyone experienced this? Tips? Workarounds? Currently the plan is to just dig a down-stair instead and have them use that to walk through the pond, see if they path more nicely.......

Yes, the water is too deep. The water 3/7 requires swimming skill. I think 1-2/7 is still passable.

Wiki disagrees.

Dwarves can safely walk through water up to a depth of 3 - at depth 4 or higher, a dwarf will cancel jobs due to "Dangerous terrain" and begin to gain swimming experience.

Yeah no, the water is not too deep, thats what makes it a functioning footwasher. If it was too deep my own dwarves wouldn't be pathing through it, let alone visitors. 4 is the minimum depth for swimming and the depth at which job cancelations happen, that's why I'm confused as to why this human didn't play nice with 3 depth

Yeah I've noticed if you provide a shortcut through ramps the visitors can get stuck even in 6 deep pond, which makes for a way to give them swimming if that's what you want.

Hence I guess alternate solution would be to use traffic designations and make the footwash pond not the most direct route into the fortress. Could even prevent your dwarves entering that area entirely if you want.
