Human caravan about to leave without unpacking.
« on: June 10, 2020, 09:29:48 pm »

Current version. I searched around and most of the posts I see about this problem are 10+ years old.

This is the forts 3rd year, and the human caravan showed up with 3 wagons and a few pack animals. I just got the notification that they are going to be leaving soon, although it says they are still unloading and I can't trade with them. Does anyone know how I can fix this before they bail? I could really use those goods, and I don't want to take them by force as unlike the Elves, Human caravans are actually useful.

1. My depot is accessible, all their wagons and such arrived.
2. It does not take long to get to my depot. They entered on a side of the map that only made them travel about 30% the width from the edge of a 4x4 embark.
3. No other caravans have had any issues to this point
4. I checked the unit list, they seem to be accounted for.
5. There are no invaders or hostiles.

Any ideas?

One of them got stuck.

If you've got dfhack, "caravan leave" followed by "caravan extend" should forcibly make them try to enter the depot again.

But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Nice, I'll give that a go. Thanks!

EDIT:

The issue is resolved, thanks for those commands!

I checked again and I discovered that a single trader and his yak or whatever was on the other side of the river which was not accessible from my fort. I watched the other traders enter the map from the northwest corner, while this guy was on the southeast corner standing next to the river. I built a fishing/water/well area over a section of the river further upstream that I then made accessible only from underground and walled it off. The caravan must have entered in a very brief window before the last wall section went up restricting single tile wide access over the river.

Interestingly enough, I completed a bridge to provide access and upon completion, instead of walking over to the bridge he, his pack animal, and a guard swam through the stream at the southern edge of the map where for some reason it is not 7/7 like the rest but fluctuates wildly between 4/5/6/7. He eventually arrived and I was able to trade successfully.

Now I know potential invaders may attempt to cross the river there. Will have to do something about that.

Thanks again.

That's where the stream flows off the map.
