My goal is to build a library with knowledge of all the topics. To speed things along, I want to steal books from other sites. There are five great libraries in my world, and two of them are within my civilization. So how do I get copies of those books into my library?

Here are the options I see:
1. Wait for the caravan to bring the books I want. This could take a long time.
2. Civil war. Considered immoral and buggy.
3. Retire the fortress and steal books as an adventurer. Would this start a civil war?
4. Retire the fortress. Start a fortress in the other dwarf civ. Steal the books. Unretire the original fortress. Steal the books.

We cannot request copied books yet from mtnhom caravans. So.. some very Ambushie type raiders, maybe called for, so they are not detected leaving with their fat loot. Scumsave often, between raids, DF is unstable.

4 Sounds like the safest bet. Make sure to save before you send troops. I'm about to retire a fort because I have 2 guys stuck traveling for the past 10 years.

3. Getting books as an adventurer will not start a civil war.

It might cause adventurer parties to try and get the book back though. I didn't experience this yet in the newest versions. In the older versions it could cause crashes in adventurer mode.

Upon resuming fortress mode, copy them as fast as possible, as aforementioned adventurers might also try get the book back in this mode. You might want to embark with extra pig tail seeds to speed up paper industry.

If you just need all the topics for Dwarves to read rather, then original books to show off. Why not just get copies, as an adventurer, and bring those copies back to your fortress?
