Crippled dwarf starving and dehydrated
« on: May 20, 2020, 11:28:26 pm »

I have a dwarf who got injured a couple months ago who somehow is stuck on the "Drink" task.  He's obtained a mug and has a drink in mind, but somehow after getting the mug can no longer move and is dehydrated, starving and in the stockpile where the mugs are.  I've tried putting a 1x1 hospital zone on him to get someone to come feed/water him but nobody will.

It might be the stuck drink task but I can't cancel it or remove him from the task.

Is there any way to trigger someone to take care of him?

Do your dwarves have the Recover Wounded labor? Do you have a well? If both are true, then your dwarves should be bringing water to him.

Yes and they aren't.  They're taking care of anyone in the main hospital though.

Does he have any motor control for either hand? if not, he might be falling victim to a known bug: crippled dwarves without hand use get stuck trying to use a mug to drink and will die of dehydration. They can be saved by forbidding all the mugs in the fortress, forcing them to drink directly from the barrel.

Unless you really like the dwarf though, I'd just wait for a migrant replacement.

Well, he died and was my best weaponsmith, so that's mildly annoying.  I forbade all the mugs and he continued holding onto it (despite allegedly not having the ability to grasp) and died very shortly afterwards.

And since I'm dealing with health issues, I have a dwarf with an infection.  Is there any way to force that dwarf to be treated?  He's just going around doing stuff like normal but I assume he'll just fall over dead at some point.

Infection is treated with water and soap.
Only clean water qualifies. If you have no drinkable water, you can use screw pumps to clean / desalinate water.
Soap requires lye (made from ash made from log) and either tallow (butchering) or oil (quern to mill seeds and screw press to squeeze the oil in a jug).
Some soap will be stored in the hospital area. You can check the contents of the box in hospital with 't'.
Dwarves will wash themselves and use soap occasionally. I often store the rest of the soap near a well.

I have plenty of soap from tallow from nearly everything I've killed as well as vegetable soap from rock nuts.  I think the hospital may have been temporarily out when he was originally treated, so he was released with an infection.  At least that's my guess, although the fight where he apparently got the infection was so long ago I don't have any messages from it left.

If they've been infected for a while they're probably fine. They'll just be in more danger should they suffer blood loss in the future.

Old infections won't be treated, although I've seen it said that that a new injury and hospitalization might cause old wounds to be cleaned as well, but it's probably not worth the risk even if it would be correct. I think I've seen infections very occasionally heal spontaneously after a very long time (years to decades), but can not swear on it.

Can that actually cause an infection?
