Can't Make Platinum Weapon
« on: May 24, 2020, 11:25:04 am »

I've been manipulating strange moods system to force the creation of artifact weapons and armor made from the metals that I specify. And it has worked fine. I have a whole set of very sharp weapons.

Now I want an artifact platinum mace, but it's not working. When a mood starts I forbid all the other metals, just as I have in the past. But when the dwarf claims his forge, he demands bluemetal specifically. And he stands there refusing to move until I unforbid it.

This bugs me, because I always make a point of assembling every moodable material to make sure that I don't get stuck on a mood. But now there's a demand that's not on the usual list. I'll take a screenshot the next time it happens.

Don't bother with a screenshot. This is an intended feature, as far as I know.

Strange moods can demand "metal" but they can also demand "metal X", provided you have created at least one bar of that metal in your fortress, which ought to apply to divine (and modded) metals as well (although I have no personal experience of either). It's probably documented at the wiki as well.

I think you'll like the result of using bluemetal too... is that modded or one of the RNG'd materials?

bluemetal is not at all suitable for blunt weapons because of it's weight. I had a fort where I gave my hammerer a bluemetal warhammer to punish criminals with because it was less dangerous than a beating with bare hands.

The blue might have priority simply because it is always the "highest value bar" available, but it might also have priority because it is always the "highest value fort-produced bar" available. When you say "he demands bluemetal specifically. And he stands there refusing to move until I unforbid it", did you only leave the platinum unforbidden, or did you leave other metals unforbidden? Those platinum bars, were they produced at the fort?

I think he means the blue metal.  Also you might not like the results as it will shoot your fort value to the moon and you will quite often suddenly experience an influx of megabeasts, sieges and the like.

Just add in data/save/raw/object/inorganit_metal.txt [ITEMS_WEAPON][ITEMS_WEAPON_RANGED][ITEMS_AMMO] to [INORGANIC:PLATINUM]. Master quality weapons and shields are fast named and named items work like legendary items. They can not be damage by wear or combat. gl

The blue might have priority simply because it is always the "highest value bar" available, but it might also have priority because it is always the "highest value fort-produced bar" available.
When it comes to strange mood item requests, item value is 100% irrelevant - moody metalworkers will either demand Wafers (i.e. BAR items made of any material with [DEEP_SPECIAL]), their Favorite metal (but only if you've produced at least one bar yourself), or whatever bars are closest to the center of the workshop.

I've reverse-engineered DF's strange mood code on multiple occasions, so I'm not just speculating - this is how it actually works.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Adamantium has to be forbid BEFORE the mood starts else they'll demand it and accept no substitutes.

Personally I just cheat a bit with dfhack and morph the bar into platinum after they've finished gathering the materials ("changeitem m INORGANIC:PLATINUM"). Saves a lot of forbidding headache and doesn't give me anything I couldn't get within the game rules anyway. One could morph a platinum bar into an adamantine wafer afterward of course, which would be 1:1 identical to what would happen with vigilant forbidding.

That is how I got my Rose Gold Shield, from 2017. Forgot the command to do that. Yeah. Thank you.

Can changeitm be used for divine materials, I wonder?

Been using it to stuff adamantine gems into my museums to up the value of my guilds and temples, to see who visits me. I would love to get "boss" who is corrupting dorfs to visit, so I can paint ghe floor with his blood. Prolly only get another one of these 24 titans.

Of course, but being a generated item type you may need to do some digging in gm-editor or the like to figure out the string.

Thank you. Ive noticed some divine material on yhe elf instruments, Ill "createitem info" on one, to get the string required to change.

On a sidenote, I got a "boss" visiting and drinking in my All Visitor Tavern. I interogated him. He was cagey, what do you think, murder him in cold blood now?

Update: didnt murder boss, but here a couple days later, a displayed artifact got stolen in front of 9 witnesses. It was not him, but one of my performers, not a visiting performer. Will this crime boss keep corrupting my dorfs? hmm, Ive derailed this post. Sorry, bout that. moving on now.
