Verticle shaft
« on: May 17, 2020, 11:04:40 pm »

All i can seem to build is a 4x4 vertical shaft downwards, but i want to do a 1x1

i tried burrows w/ a flood gate to trap the miner, he gets 3 down and stops digging despite having channel downwards below him, also i tried then removing the upward slope below him and still nothing.

i tried doing a 2 ramp top at the start because originally before the flood gate it went a few down and thenn was trapped up top and a ramp down 1 level did not help

how do i do a 1x1 shaft

Try digging a staircase, then channeling that afterwards.

Your dwarf may have stopped because the tile below has potential standing locations or is different in some way (maybe it is cavern or aquifer).

I tested this:
- choose 'd' 'r' to designate ramps
- move cursor to bottom of intended location shaft, hit Enter, move cursor up to top of shaft, hit Enter

The dwarf dug for 74 z's and then stopped. I designated a tile to the side and he dug that out, and then he restarted on the ramp below, which exposed the caverns by digging into the cavern wall. That level looked like this:
tww     t=tree branches
trw      r=ramp
tww     w=natural wall

So, I think the dwarf was refusing to dig down, because the tile below had a potential standing location, on the tree branches. He used the tree to channel two more tiles, then without a tree to stand on, he refused to dig those ramps, but instead climbed the wall to the floor (a few z's down), walked below the tree and proceeded to dig ramps down until he was surrounded by warm stone, indicating that he stopped because the magma sea was below.

There is something to be said about, if the stakes are as high, maybe reconsider your certitudes. One has to be aggressively allistic to feel entitled to be able to trust. But it won't happen to me, my bit doesn't count etc etc... Just saying, after my recent experiences I couldn't trust the public if I wanted to. People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.

They dig until they decide they're hungry/thirsty/sleepy and then try to either get up (by climbing) or go to sleep where they are. When building my minecart repeaters I sometimes get a dorf trapped below when he decides other things are more important, and he then performs a curious dance where he digs a tile, runs away, digs another,... to eventually get out (or the other miner manages to dig down the walkable path to release the first miner).

For my short shafts I just channel down and hope they'll get it done (and send them back in by digging a tunnel from the side if they stop, to plug that access up with a wall afterwards). For a long shaft you can either dig stairs and then channel them away from the top as mentioned (make sure only to have a single miner for that step), or build a staircase beside the shaft so miners can stand on that while channeling (which allows them to work in parallel).

What PatrikLundell said. I did a parallel staircase next to the shaft if there is no place for a door at the bottom. Otherwise staircase ---> channel will take care of it, as long as the dwarf has a way to leave and return.

I believe shafts are easier to climb than bare walls, but I actually am not sure about that. They certainly are in real life.

I would dig a vertical U/D staircase, then a column of single-tile hallways next to the staircases. Then channel the third tile and construct a wall or locked door on the hallway.

From the side:

then constructions or doors
