Weapons wearing out
« on: April 22, 2020, 12:32:00 pm »

Been away from DF a few years. Installed 47.04 and commenced discovery of new world. After beating off undead invasion I noticed my masterwork weapons are now worn badly. This is a new feature to me (though I see its updated on the wiki and it makes sense).

Can I repair weapons now? Or does anyone have other tips to help my dwarves avoid tantrums from disposing of attachments and masterwork weapons?

Not much you can do besides have a small number of highly specialised weaponsmiths who also produce a whole bunch of other masterwork crafts. The more masterwork crafts they produce, the less impact the loss of a piece of art they feel

Good news is, as your militia-dwarves spar and kill things those "attachments" of theirs will develop into proper names for the weapons in question! Named weapons are (to my knowledge) impervious to wear-- like artifacts.

Thanks for the answers. Good to know. Has the speed of naming weapons changed? I noticed so far only shields have gone from grown attached to actually being named in my fort.

In a twist of fate, turns out that legendary weapon smith died suspiciously of dehydration during the siege so his feelings don't matter so much anymore. :-S

I often use ranged dwarves. Equipped with a lot of masterwork bolts. Sometimes a goblin escapes with such a bolt still stuck in him: A Masterwork has been Lost!

Luckily the crafters don't care. They produced many bolts to become legendary smiths. They also don't care about masterwork bolts being destroyed during training or combat. Those are considered spend well. So setting up a marksdwarf squad could work.

If you have limited access to weapon grade metals you could craft axes and melt all non masterworks to train weaponsmiths. Doing the same with weapon traps would even increase the amount of metals. As long as you have a lot of masterworks produced, smiths shouldn't care much about losing a few.

Now I'm imagining what's going through that goblin's head...

"Ow, that hurts like a MFer, but that masterwork steel bolt with bone inlay is worthy more than everything I owned up to this point!"

I went heavy on ranged dwarves once... then the undead showed up. Turns out crossbows don't have a lot of impact on undead. ;-)

I always keep a squad of them once I get up and running but mostly focus on axe and hammer wielders.

Another way to deal with worn masterworks is to use the garbage disposal service, a.k.a. caravan, to exchange it for replacement materials at a profit and provide the smith with some work to create a replacement.

Is it possible to set up a stockpile for worn stuff to make use of autostrade from DFhack?

No, there is no way to sort items by wear on stockpiles. That would be a feature I'd really love to sort worn clothing for easy disposal or trade. Handling broken armor would be a nice bonus.

At best you can do something like cleanowned x in dfhack to mark them all for dumping.
