How to force poets/musicians to write their knowledge?
« on: April 24, 2020, 03:28:03 am »

I want to collect something like disk collection with music and poetry in my fortress. I got few dwarfs that already wrote some stuff before they come to me (check in legends). I tryed assing them as scribes and scholars for years with no result. They only idling, socialising or worshiping. Not even trying to write something new.

Also I know how scribes work for other knoledge with coping physically available books. But what about poetry? Dwarves know it and can recite time to time so they scould be available to write it?

Is any way to save dwarven music and poetry in physical form except hunting for original books?

They are able to write manuals on their art forms, but it is very rare that they do so and there is no way to force them.

The simplest way is to make an adventurer, learn the form by finding a performer and listening in, and then write a choreography/musical composition/poem, but that will not be the specific poems that are recited in your fort.

An adventurer would work best.

Make sure to have a lot of quires ready before you make the adventurer, they are hard to find.

If you do not mind hacking, dfhack bodyswap allows you to take control of a poet or musician.

It is not possible to write in a fortress with an adventurer. It takes a while to write. Quiet locations help to speed up the process.

It is hard to restore a fortress after retiring. I recommend to put minimal effort in a fortress used to supply an adventurer and make the real fortress after.

You need to get them to spend time in library as a scholar for them to ponder anything, and to have quires/scrolls to write on when the time comes. If they're not going there on their own, you need to get them to finish any job there; even sleeping/eating/drinking will do.

Mind that pondering can take half a decade for proficient embark dwarf to make first discovery from.

They don't want a discovery though, they want the performers to write down their poetry and music. Which they can, but they just basically never do.

Thanks for advices! I used adventure/retire once long ago but didn't very like it. Will wait for a little longer for natural writing events. Honestly 0.47.03 worlds with lots of deities really don't help. As a side product I have lots of other books about math, mechanics, economy and other stuff from other dwarfs (12 game years). Very happy with legendary mathematician migrant.

For now I training military for two reason.
1. Recover original books.
2. Rizing teacher skill. May be master/apprentice relationship will work like a living music disk. Or I will have more dwarfs with music/poetry knowledge to assign to libraries.
