On to the next fort...
« on: March 18, 2020, 09:17:10 pm »

So I have done all I really want to do with my current fort, even have the king here after a "brief discussion". I like the world I am in. I know there are two options in the save menu, Retire fortress, and Abandon fortress. What are the pros and cons of each option? What actually happens when I do either? I haven't been able to find a lot of clarity on the wiki, but my google fu could just be failing me again. Most of what I have found leads to discussions about adventure mode, which I'm not really interested in (I have Dungeon Crawl for that particular itch).

Retiring makes it more interesting to visit as an adventurer later. Abandoning scatters all your stuff everywhere (retiring moves some things about, but not as frustratingly).

And while there are one or two bugs to work through, retiring means you can come back and unretire later. You can send a reclaim party to take back your abandoned fortress of course, but dealing with all your stuff scattered all over the map is pretty annoying if you had a big fortress.

Your dorfs will have a tendancy to turn up at your new fortress, slightly too often for a convincing simulation unfortunately. Watch out if you had any werebeasts locked away.

Retiring the fort is what I'd do; it'll still exist and will be left to world gen.

If you don't want all your old dwarves migrating to your new fort, you can choose a different dwarf civilization to play as (assuming there are multiple in your world).

Quote from: Chesterton
For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

That does actually work, doesn't it?

Retired forts - in my experience - seem to gather more nobles than existing locations (my guess, it's value based and player fortresses are usually outrageously valuable.) So if you want all the nobility in one place, retire it. If you want them to remain somewhat spread out, abandon it. It'll have little to no impact on your real play, though.

If my dwarfs have tamed some species (cave crocs for example), or have now gained access to a resource, (sliver barb, from raids and now growing), will those be available on embark for the new fort? Or might they show up for trade later? I have had to leave DF off you the last two weeks due to school closures (I teach, and have had to convert most of the rest of the year into online lessons). I am still planning on trying a new fort my current world, but I want to do it "right".

Tamed animals are not, unfortunately. Experimented with it myself. Domestication happens at the civ level, seemingly only during world gen.

Access to stone, I'm not so sure. I would guess not, but haven't tested it myself. Since all that is at the civ level, I would again guess it's baked in after worldgen.
