Stores to sell goods to visitors
« on: February 28, 2020, 06:59:31 am »

Currently we can sell our stuff to the big trading caravans, but we also get lots of visitors and can't sell them anything.
I think it'd be interesting if we could set up stores for individuals to buy our goods for currency (not based on an economy, but on the raw value of the coins).

My general idea is that you'd be able to add items to the store and set up a price for each (probably with a "suggested price" feature to reduce micromanagement), and as long as a dwarf is manning the store, any visitor can go there and buy an item they want automatically. That way you don't have to constantly manage a "sell" screen similar to the Trade Depots.
You could set up some goods to stay up for sale constantly and auto-replenishing from the stockpiles, and other goods for one-time only sales.

I'm for this idea, it sounds like an easy addition.

This topic has been discussed in previous economy threads, and I think that's the crux of it. If you sell stuff, you'd get coins, which would be pretty useless, except for trading with the caravan, but then... Why not just sell that stuff to the caravan? I really don't see this coming up until the Dwarven Economy is reintroduced.

That said, this would be a nice different way to make a fort. Just a few craftsdwarves making stone jewelry and hocking their wares sounds fun to me.

Hmm, maybe also allowing your dwarves to buy stuff from visitors? Like you set up a "buy order" and when a visitor sees it and is willing to sell, you use up the coins.

Dwarves should also rent or own their own shops.

How hard would it be to make a system so that coins work like in Rimworld? (For those who don't know: in RW bartering is possible, but while trading you can also convert into silver, which is effectively coins (as in, 1 silver= 1 unit of price). Silver is shared among all colonists, and can be used to trade with caravans freely. Would such a system be possible in DF? You could get caravans to carry a large amount of coins easily, with all coins having a fixed value, and being shared by the whole fortress. Getting back to OP's things, you could use such merchants to trade objects in exchange for small quantities of coins. As a bonus, because the visitor wouldn't be a professional merchant, it would be possible to have much better retail rates, maybe even a slight profit this way (with the caveat of the quantities being much smaller)

Also, one thing that removed dwarven economy was for things beings unable to restack. So many clutter of hauling jobs with single coins popped up in old forts. Dunno if restacking works and will work in near future, but it was one of the factors that got economy removed.
How DF is now shaping and what I can gather... Dwarven Economy is soon upon us once again. (Soon, like... 1-2 years).

But yeah, how it effectively worked was that a dwarf claimed a workshop named "shop", dictated what kind of shop, usually filling a market with least competition, paying taxes, getting rich. Drinking and meals were paid directly to the fortress treasury and we even had tax collector noble role for all tax collecting needs. Doing tasks got dwarves paid. So, figure putting all those back in will be semi-hassle free.

I thought coins are stackable now? Shouldn't the economy be brought back now?

Economy in the past was completely unrelated to the outside world. It's not coming back ever in that strange isolated form. The world is alive now, it has an economy (on pause after initial worldgen) which the fortress will have to respect when it's all turned on in real-time play.

Current release schedule has it far in the future after Mythgen and Starting Scenarios development arcs. That's not going to change just because stacking is possible now.

You still can't re-stack them, unless I missed something.
