Artsy Fortress
« on: February 02, 2008, 03:38:00 pm »

I have been curious for some time about the different aesthetic things people have done. Making images on the floor with different colored floor tiles and things like that. I have seen a few but not a thread dedicated to these creations. I myself am still trying to figure out things to do with multicolor stones I have in mass. So in the time I attempt to make something to add. Could you post your own creations?

This can be anything you find, not necessarily efficient, but otherwise cool looking or artsy.

This may not be, howyousay, tasteful, but I remember I made an entrance hallway to one of my fortresses that was really neat; it had two guard posts with arrow slits, statues, and was all smoothed, with plans to engrave. Looked something like this:
code:

     +DD+
    ++  ++
    +s  s+
    ++  ++
     +  +
    ++  ++
    +s  s+
  ++++  ++++
  +  =  =  +
  D  +  +  D
  +  =  =  +
  ++++DD++++

It took me about six months (gametime, duhur,) to realise that it looked a tad, well, inappropriate.

I made an American flag out of walls of cobaltite (for the blue), kaolinite (for the red), platinum for the stripes, and silver for the stars. It ended up being 18x13 with 16 stars.

That sounds pretty cool. It would be awesome if someone did a globe.

It's damn difficult to get a decent-looking circle in DF, what with the tiles being square and all.

Way zoomed-in MS paint with the grid turned on is my friend when making circular rooms.

With circular rooms - make it big enough and it wont be nearly as noticeable. The only difference between a crappy rough pixelated picture and a clear, perfect one is the number of squares. A globe taking up an entire Z-level would be epic.

It's important to wear lots of face paint while you program. And you can type with your long Gene Simmons tongue.

You would only be able to make it thirty z-levels high, though.

Err, scratch that. A MAP of the world taking up an entire z-level would be epic. You would only really need about 4 colors - green, blue, white, and brown. Having all four in one map in abundance would be hard though.

The blue could be water. To make it that much more epic. You could also use green glass.

I had a huge aboveground city on my old computer, the palaces and temples (yeah, temples- I just used them as sculpture gardens basically) were all multicolored and had designs on the floor. My Temple of Love had a red heart in the main hall, my Temple of War had a green skull.

Unfortunately I was forced to reformat and lost it. I've been trying to rebuild but I always lose interest before I get anything significant completed  :(

I tried making a fortress that was basically a "stadium" design built into a plain, with rooms around the perimiter with windows looking out, for bedrooms and such. I mostly succeeded. The pit was completed, and the rooms were dug out.
Unfortunately, a goblin siege came, slaughtered my caravan, and is now camping my food stockpile. I have pretty much zero military power so I have no idea what to do. :P

dig a long corridor under them, load it with traps of your choice, and then dig an upwards ramp there, most likely you'll lose the dwarf, but you'll save the fortress.
