Hunter not hunting at all
« on: December 28, 2019, 01:52:48 am »

Hi everybody, I have a hunter dwarf who consistently refuses to do his job. Hunting is activated and he already owns a crossbow. I have made a quiver for him and lots of bolts. However, he does not appropriate the items and does not set to hunting. Should I "assign" quiver and bolts to him somehow, or am I forgetting something he needs? Help appreciated!

Make sure he doesn't have a "uniform clash".
Woodcutter, hunter, miner and of course military all have a uniform and assigning more than one can mess things up.

Make sure crossbow, quiver and bolts are accessible (bolts can get stuck in bins, possibly, try putting them in a stockpile without bins).

Has he gone to get any of his equipment at all?

Make sure hunting labor is enabled (just because he's a hunter, doesn't necessarily mean he'll have it on automatically).

Make sure hunters are assigned bolts in the military screen too (on automatically, but I guess your military archers might claim them all unless you tweak some numbers).

On top of what Shonai_Dweller posted, the hunter will attempt to equip their tools in order; crossbow first, quiver second, and bolts third.

So, if the hunter has a crossbow equipped (one that was not equipped as part of a military uniform), then the quiver might be the problem (if you can spare the leather, crafting another quiver might be the quick fix).

There is something to be said about, if the stakes are as high, maybe reconsider your certitudes. One has to be aggressively allistic to feel entitled to be able to trust. But it won't happen to me, my bit doesn't count etc etc... Just saying, after my recent experiences I couldn't trust the public if I wanted to. People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.

Also make sure to assign your hunter a hunting dog if you can, they help finish off animals your hunter has injured or nearly killed.
