I'm simply curious on this topic. Say I wanted to make a Roman civ or other old civ in DF. What would be the best approximation of their ethics and values in Dwarf Fortress? I also ask this so that modders in the future who wish to recreate these civilizations can do to the best of their ability.

Civilizations from across the past I am curious about in particular:
  • Romans
  • Franks
  • Ancient Greeks
  • Anglo-Saxons
  • Sengoku period Japan
  • Holy Roman Empire
  • Ottomans
  • Ancient Scandinavians

While there would be some variation, unlike fantasy races, human civs share most of the same values/ethics/spheres. Civilizations rely on agriculture, cooperation, friendship, family, laws, hard work etc. There is strict punishment for trying to destroy this communal structure, so treason, theft, assault, murder is treated unfavorably. Humans are active during the day and are prone to war making spheres like day, sun, fertility, agriculture, war, etc. favorable and things like filth and disease only idolized by outcasts and the anarchist fringe of the civilization (and would not be represented by the civilization as a whole). Artowk and tradition could have some variation, but these are normally also favored by all civs. Independence could be argued based on the political structure, but for that time period most is feudalism (and not independent), except for possibly the republic of rome.

The major differences between civs would come from the resources available to them and their cultural expression: e.g.  types of pets/livestock, clothing styles, artwork styles, food, etc.
