Royal Ambitions - IC Turn 1 Spring
« on: October 21, 2019, 02:44:36 pm »

In the Farthest North lie the lands of the Nannan Empire and it's neighbours.

Settled by the Portuzi centuries ago, it is now dominated by them. First and foremost amongst the Portuzi powers is of course Nannan Proper. Covering almost a third of the Continent it is the most populous and of course the largest country on the continent. And yet, vast stretches of its realm, almost a third again lie empty of civilization. The Ice Wastes and the Eternal Peaks make life impossible in the Northern reaches...and yet Nannan has stubbornly send expedition after expedition, laying claim to lands absolutely useless to it.

It's Northern provinces lie in stark contrast to the South, Taiga and Tundra connected to vast stretches of temperate Woodlands whcih terminate at the Southern coast, where heavy rainfalls feed the towering Orlock-trees which are dominating the landscape of southern Nannan.

Yet the dominating feature of Nannan would probably be the Cueibeira river. Its many tributaries reach into every nook and cranny of the Empire and permeate much of the Forests of Taramdar as well.
While Nannan is predominantly Portuzi and following the Tranho Denomination of the Portuzi Faith, it also contains a significant amount of the remaining indigenies, the Vengrians, small minorities of Shwazen and Luari indigenies and fully two third of the proud Roimlanders, which of course follow roimlandic rites of ancestral worship.

Of small interest is a sect in Eastern Nannan, which only recently emerged. The Sect of the Holy Father, exclusively worships Pomalhos, the Cheerful One, Father of the Gods and God of Fertility and Festivities, as opposed to the Tranho Denomination which puts merely an emphasis on Pomalhos and the Elder Pantheon, while the Madaco Denomination, situated in Noveria, puts more emphasis on The Younger Pantheon and the God of War Madacoais the White Cobra.

Then there is of course the Duchy of Taramdar, really a splinter of Nannan, it's survival is not only owed to the defensibility of the Thickly forested and swampy lands, but also due to the significance of its capital, Pinhos, the first Portuzi city on the continent. Better...or worse even The Tabara Dynasty can lay claim to the Throne of Nannan. While no attempts at succession wars have yet been made, the Nannans and Taramdarians are painfully aware of the power they wield over each other.

South of Nannan lies the third Portuzi Nation: Noveria. Where Nannan is all forests and tundra and Taramdar Swamps and even Gloomier Forests, Noveria is hot and humid. Like msot of the continent it is heavily forested, but instead of the deciduous forests of Nannan, it is seasonal tropical forests. In short Noveria is an ideal land for agriculture, except for the parts where its all jungle...or where there is Roimlanders and of course, the Roimish Mountains...or it's Northeastern Parts which are exclusively swamplands.

Noverias population is by and large Portuzi and follows the Madaco Denomination, worshipping The Younger Pantheon. It also is home to the other half of the remaining Vengrians on the Continent, which however follow Tranho traditions. the Roimlanders in the North just like in Nannan are fiercely autonomous and worship their ancestors. And in the Northeast are the Hesklanders. Only recently conquered by Noveria and its neighbours, the Hesklanders are still following their own pagan faith and have not integrated into any of its three new sovereigns.

In the Far West lies the Sovereign State of Solaria, home to five and a half million Shwazians. Covered in moors, highlands, taiga and tundra, the Shwazians are a hardy people, gloomy to boot and one of the few indigenous people who successfully held the Portuzi at bay. Better even, conquests saw their lands increased  by lands which were rich and far more forgiving than their traditional homeland. In a blatant powermove the Capital was moved to Breitbach right at the border with Nannan and now with more than two centuries past that point, the Portuzi in Eastern Solaria have become Shwazi in all but looks.

One thing they still demand for themselves was the worship of the Elder Pantheon of Portuzi. Beyond that most of the Shwazians follow their ancient beliefs that unlike other people they were descended from the Great White Apes of the Far North, after one of them (the mythical progenitor of the Shwazians) ,Shlitterbach, devoured one of the southlander gods and became sentient.

The Myth of the Bloody Ape is as grim, morose and bloody as much of the Shwazian myths and stories, most of which seem to take and almost pornographic pleasure in the variety of indignities and violence inflicted upon its characters.

East of Nannan, protected by the Roimish Mountains and its very belligerent inhabitants lies The Noble Republic of Appalachia, a confederation of the Eastern Roimlanders and the Remnants of the Astellian people. The Astellians, which make up most of the population where once peaceful tribesmen who settled along the Grasslands of what is now Eastern Nannan. The Colonization of the Portuzi forced the Astellians to flee eastwards through the Roimish Mountains, ultimately settling in what is today Appalachia.

With the Roimish now at their very doorstep and hardened through years of warfare with the Portuzi, the Astellians are a far cry from the peaceful herders living on the Grass Sea. This change in culture is probably most notable in their beliefs. The original Belief in Tarmuca Ca, the Sleeping Ancestor, has transformed into the the Dark Reaper: Relo Cas. Tarmuca Ca was originally a personification of the Earth, a sleeping giant in which hairs the Astellians dwelt, but the Portuzi killed Tarmuca Ca, whose vengeful spirit Relo Cas now guides the Astellians.Patrirism is spread all across Appalachia and is even common amongst the Roimish there who abandoned their ancestor worship in favor of it. A small minority of Hesklanders also joined the Noble Republic, in hopes of someday freeing their lands from the clutches of the Noverians and the Magnamica.

Finally in the east lies the Principality of Magnamica. While the Portuzi came from the Sea, the Luari came from the Great Swamps. Fleeing some unknown cataclysm they now hold control over some of the most fertile areas of the Continent. They also have thoroughly subjugated the local Somi people and a good third of the Hesklander homeland. The Luari are a thoroughly warlike people and in Noveria have found a rival which they love to hate. Several Wars have resulted in considerable land gains for Magnamica and a large population of Portuzi under their sway.

The Luari belief in a diverse Pantheon of cruel and unforgiving Gods, highest of them being the Raven of Pain.
Meanwhile the Somi believe in Lanta the Yellow Lark, who has gone into hiding to bide her time until the Red Raven weakens.

The Lands of the North are a powderkeg waiting to explode...the only question remains...who will light the spark?

Queen Ellana I of House Honore hosts a week of feasting and games (the traditional iron toss, knife dancing, dressage), inviting champions from across the land to present themselves.

Noble Republic of Appalachia

Trumpets blare and the tumult of the great hall is slowly replaced by silence, from the head of the hall before the assembled nobles lining there tables inundated with food and wine upon a raised dais a great throne of dark wood stands above the assembled crowds. Standing before this chair a grizzled bear of a man, with a booming voice he addresses the room.

"Roimish! Astellians! Hesklanders! we have long struggled against ourselves fighting tooth and nail for scraps be it fertile land, fine timbers, or even women to call our wives. While we all love our homeland and call it dear there simply is not enough for the lot of us and instead of fighting and scraping among ourselves, we will conquer and take from our neighbors who consider us a slow witted backwards people. We will teach them the cost of insulting followers of Relo Cas, they shall fell the wrath of the Dark Reaper as he blesses us on our conquests. We shall take there women and their lands. But let us not rush foolhardy into conquests that we can not maintain first we must assure to have properly honored our God and properly defend our borders as well. To this end i shall commission a great temple to Relo Cas in the city of Arcuva a great stone monument to our God where we can make sacrifices prayers and make ready for war in sight of our enemies lands to drive fear into there hearts. In the great city of Pariture we shall construct a great merchant wharf to help finance our conquests. I shall also look abroad for other nations and peoples willing to make sacrifices to Relo Cas and fight with his reapers in this world. When we have secured allies and when we have finished these grand constructions we shall conquer new lands for the prosperity of our people. For Appalachia for Relo Cas!!!"

Action: Being planning and construction of infrastructure and forts to more easily control the region and defend it, ensuring that whatever choke points exist are fortified and difficult for an attacker to effectively take.

Recruit a small force of paid scouts to guard the border. Save the rest of the money for a "rainy day fund".

Cueibeira, the capital on the river. One of the largest burgs in the world, built around one of the longest rivers, and the most important city of the largest nation in the north. From this city an empire is run, the ever-turning gears of administration stretching from the Vengrians of Nannan's southern border to the cold and unforgiving climate of the far north, where the snow never stops it's fall and the mountains rise higher into the sky than anywhere else. Wealth and power unimaginable to the rest of the civilised world is all organised here, under the control of the ancient Ro dynasty, who have served as the empire's Protectors since the first of the Portuzi set food on this northern land. Legends say that the first Protector was the captain of the first ship to discover this land, and that he was a mighty man who lead the his people to victory against the vicious locals time and time again, carving out a state that grew to it's current power though that first man's descendants. At a glance, one might even think the Nannan Empire indestructible, as it's power and wealth surely leave it leagues ahead of even the most powerful of it's neighbours.

One would be a fool to think so, however. In truth it is a powder keg, with a decadent ruling dynasty and so many different cultures and religions present that there are many who eagerly await a chance to free themselves from the 'tyranny' of the Protectors. With all the power of an empire at their fingertips, the Ro Protectors wasted men and time claiming ever more useless stretches of land in the frozen north simply to satisfy their own egos, ignorant of those hiding in the shadows, waiting to end their rule forever. It's wealth and military may be great - but it is spread over a vast empire and is useless if left unused. The empire has prospered under so many years of peace under fools too decadent to see the bigger picture, but now the years of peace and slow decline are at an end. Humiliation after humiliation have been dealt to the empire, with the loss of lands to the inferior Solarians and the secession of the Duchy of Taramdar, and it has done nothing about any of this.

It is time for this to change. Hhin Naf Ro proved himself in the military from a young age, but he always despised the decadence he saw even within this branch of the empire. He has watched his dynasty dwindle to an unbearably small size as few legitimate members are born, and now he is the last member of the primary branch, only birthed by his father out of a sense of obligation. He watched as his father practically ate himself to death, and now he has inherited the empire as it's Protector. For the first time in decades the empire has a Protector who cares little for the frivolities of his position and is determined to bring the empire back from the brink. It is time for the beast to awaken, it is time for the giant to rise, it is time for the mighty Nannan Empire to prove it's power to the world once again.

For the Protector of the North - For the Empire!

An important letter is written to Duke Sorlen of Tabara. Further details sent by way of PM.

Spring of Year 1

((Each year consists of 4 "Turns", during which different weather effects will take place. Units, maintenance and taxes however are only collected once a year...same goes for unrest, prosperity and rebellion changes...apart from what you actively cause))

Appalachia

Truly, a vast project, the Border Town of Arcuva is host to the first Temple Fortress raised in the name of Relo Cas, the Dark Reaper. Beyond the already built stone walls of the city, the Appalachians are about to erect a three tiered Fortress, finished by a large Temple-Citadel hewn into the very cliffside of the Roimish Mountains. A project of such size will however take some years to finish...

Nannan Empire

Responding to the building of such a massive citadel, The Empire decides to build two forts both to the left and the right side of the Forough River. These however are far less impressive, consisting only of wooden palisades.

But the Empires pockets are deep, and what it doesnt spend in one place it spends in more. Soon enough Noverian scouts can watch as the city walls of both Matvandor and Roirosquer are reinforced and butressed with extra towers. All made of sturdy stone.

Finally a Fort springs up near lake Schönberg on the Solarian Border, a thing made of wood.

For now it seems that the Nations of the North dig in and wait for someone else to make the first move...

First Among Equals Chester Riley once again takes to the dais before the assembled nobles of Appalachia, however unlike the first assembly led by the new leader this one is of a calmer and more organized tone.

Imperial Mandate: 001
Well ill be frank with you my compatriots when i promised to build a great temple to Relo Cas i had no idea what our nations actual budget was as I had so recently taken the throne. This great monument to the reaper will be completed possibly not in any of our lifetimes but we will get it done. However financially this will be a great strain upon us. So we need to explore alternate revenue streams in this way I will be asking for your help Nobles be you Baron, Count, or Duke; Hesklander, Astellians, Roimish we must place a greater burden upon our peoples to secure the independence of our great republic from out vile and imperialist neighbors. To this means you are hereby authorized to strip all peasants living in urban centers of two tenths of there personal wealth, any merchant travelling or other wise four tenths of there wealth, and any rural peasant one tenths of there wealth. While this will ultimately lower tax income in the future the immediate influx of cash will enable us too complete necessary projects for the self defense of our nation, and it is imperative you make sure the peasants know as much. To the clergy servants of the Reaper i seek for you too assure our peasantry of the necessity of these actions to bring glory to Relo Cas. A full ninety percent of the funds we raise through this mandate will go to the construction of his great mountain temple after all. With the last ten percent being used for other projects to glorify his name.

Imperial Mandate: 002
A fairly straight forward fare for this order of bushiness in regards to budget currently through revenue's from taxes we pull in four thousand or so ducats a month, every month we shall put fifteen hundred of said ducats toward the construction of the fortress until it is finished. Private donations by those extremely devoted in you pursuit of Relo Cas are more then welcome to make donations to this great project of ours.

Imperial Edict: 001
I know what your going to say yes we are already horribly over budget with the current constructions is it really wise to start more, my best answer to you maybe haha. But its clear times of great hardship are coming and we have to be ready to face them.  To this end i aim to start the construction of three more modest temples to Relo Cas, within the cities of Trilpiguen, Marduram, and Connonia. Located within the burgs if possible the temple itself will serve as a center piece two stories tall and made of the most abundantly available stone in the region and surrounded by a thin stone curtain wall or wooden stockade will serve to reinforce the Burgs defenses and maintain the morale of the people during a siege. These simple constructions will hopefully fall within a budget of no more then five hundred ducats a piece and the design shall be reconsidered if they exceed eight hundred ducats in price when finalized.
