Games For Windows Article
« on: July 10, 2007, 12:53:00 pm »

I just found out about DF in GFW a week ago, and I am already hooked. Who else has just started? How long did it take to "not see the code"? How many fortresses have you lost/flooded? And, have you made your own tile-sets yet?

"Not seeing the code" took a while for me. I struggled a bit with Nethack but after about a month I found Roguelikes to be much more fun.

The problem with DF though is just getting used to the commands and interface. On the DoomRL boards someone plugged DF (This was about halfway through 2006).

I took a look and despite being able to instantly pick out "This is a tree. This is a dwarf. This is a massive freaking mountain." I made the mistake of not searching the website for help files, so I gave up.

Found it again early this year while spring cleaning my HDD, read the help files, got hooked.

Since then I have flooded about 18 fortresses (a third of them being magmafloods) and in Adventure mode have made the dumb mistake of pulling the farm irrigation lever and walking through the door.

Good times.

I'd like to add another question to the list:

What is the highest fortress population you have ever achieved and how long have you sustained it for?

Me? 118. I believe in chlorinating the gene pool so in most of my fortresses I build my sleeping rooms like this:

code:

...#~#...   . = floor
.###~###.   ~ = water
.+bX~Xb+.   # = wall
.###~###.   + = door
           X = floodgate
           b = bed

Of course the rooms are not to scale..but it helps get rid of nobles, peasants and excess population.

Hehe it came naturally for me because I learnt about it when a friend in the C++ I was taking showed me. When you are already knee deep in text it hardly matters for games.

In about a day or so. Pretty cool too.

Anyone get the tomb reference? I think atleast its a reference because its a zero. And in binary One = True Zero = False, or on and off something like that. And its a Zero o_O.

I too was turned on to DF by that article in GFW.

Fortunately for me, it took me a week or two to build up the courage to actually PLAY the game.  In that time, I read as much as I could from the Wiki and the Forums.

I'm on my second fortress now, after playing for a couple of weeks.  Nothing happened to my first fortress, I just made a few glaring design mistakes that I wanted to address.

Of course, I play on Calm maps exclusively, so I have yet to have any sort of siege.  I haven't even had anything come from the chasm or river.  I just get the occasional Kobold thief or goblin baby-snatcher.

Combat sounds like fun, but I don't feel that I have the basics down enough yet to try it.  I generally don't do any works with metal until I have reached the Magma, and I've never trained or trapped animals.

I see all these great fortress designs, and I tried to build one myself, but I always mess it up during the push to the river or chasm.

Nonetheless, DF is one of the most engaging games I've ever played.
