Bestiary of some of the Creatures in our area of the world.
The Nothic is a species like frost trolls of the old world that lives in the forests of the Taiga region. The Nothic seem to have evolved in a different way than other Trolls in folktales. While other Trolls are carnivorous, the Nothic, are herbivorous. When a large group of Trolls is gathered, they gather and eat a single fruit. Each Nothic has their own fruit, and the Nothic gather it from each other.
The Nothic seem to have the ability to wield magic, however how this is done is unkown by our observers who have seen one. They usually spend most of their time alone, and seem to worship nature.
Bit weird, since we so rarely see one outside their seeming gatherings. We are just calling it magic, since we have no idea how they do the things we have seen. One animal of the Tundra was what has been called the Snow Cheater by those who have encountered it. More known by it's nickname, it was written into the records as a variant species of the Cheetah from Earth. Boasting a speckled white cloak, from a distance it looks like a part of the terrain. It can wait for days for prey to pass by it, completely still until it lunges forth, achieving speeds of 70 miles per hour, by recent estimates.
It's claws are tough enough to tear into iron and through most clothing, and if it does not down the prey on it's first strike, it runs away before stalking it's prey with lightning fast lunges and darting blows. It has proven to be extremely dangerous during the earlier years, but beatable by proper teamwork. It and other foes gave rise to the position of a Tank that carried shields, skilled in parrying and blocking attacks, while others struck as it was off balance.
It's fur makes for a good coat against the icy chill, and it's claws are great sources of titanium and iron, once you extract it from the rest of the claw. Why they have this is a mystery though.
The Sun Lion Packs are one of the great mysteries of this frozen land. Long Ranging, Omnivores, they seem to be someone's idea of a joke. Where most animals at least don't clash with the terrain, Sun Lions are a Golden Red, constantly emitting light from their manes. Meanwhile the Dark Lioness can best be called a predator, not giving off such light with it's deep blue-black coat, making use of the males to sneak through the night while attention is turned and night vision ruined while they seem perfectly fine. They are both very powerful, and pack oriented hunters and gatherers. Not only that, but the Males seem to melt the snow around them by their presence, uncovering grasses, as well as seeming to be able to coat themselves in fire when defending.
However, they are somewhat peaceful to us from what we understand of our encounters. They are hunters of the night though, so perhaps our habit of traveling in a Party means they don't attack us. Well, anything that isn't trying to kill us is something we can live with, so they roam as one of the nights luring lights.
The Peregrine Turtle has recently been discovered in the Abyss. Rather, during the initial tests of probes with cameras, it was spotted. A feathered creature with a dark shell and flat limbs, it seems to swim through the air almost lackadaisically. However, it almost immediately darted away with great speed from the probe as it fell.
Not much is known about it, other than hinting at an ecosystem in the abyss itself. A creature that could almost float, without anything seeming to keep it up. It is possible the shell has some lighter gas which lets them swim in the air.
Further testing showed the presence of airborn plankton that also seemed to form part of an ecosystem, though how they feed themselves is unknown. Perhaps they are like the trees in processing gases for energy. At the least, it only appears to exist lower than the islands we currently have access to, starting to appear about 100 meters.
Testing, Testing. So, some of our scientists decided to use our tech to see the abyss. Just simple probes.
Well, the results are a bit off. First, after 400 meters(by our estimate based upon triangulation), the signal becomes too scrambled, and cuts out..
After more testing and losing a tower to the abyss, we managed decided to drop a single use probe, that would send out a powerful signal once it hit something hard enough.
Testing and triangulation varied. Some spots hit at 10000 meters, some 4000. and in-between. What they hit is very much up for debate. The deepest we managed was 14000 meters, near the middle of the abyss, between the known center and the walls. Needless to say, it is very very deep. Though the numbers may be off, anything that goes down there will not likely surface again.
Which makes it very strange that the Rocs we've seen actually go down there to hunt. There is likely to be an entire ecosystem, and more islands, down below that never see the sun. One day, if Himmel Lin's vision is ever created, we may go down there to see what lies in the Abyss.
ExpeditionsRecently, we have advanced far enough to be able to safely travel far afield. While the potential war on the horizon is concerning, it does not satiate our drive to learn.
Therefore, with the Prototype soon to be circulated out of production(hopefully), it receives one last tuneup, it and the Transverse convoys set out to secure new routes.
U~ōtāendo,
Following the abyss, they come across a magnificent sight, where the waters stretch out for miles, an ocean beach, and rocky outcrops surrounding a never-ending waterfall plunging into the Abyss. Here, an outpost is built, but they are soon assaulted by new creatures they have never seen before rising out of the waters.
After a fierce battle, the order is made to retreat, and data compiled. It is safe to say that without the Prototype, this would have obliterated the expedition.
From here, they mostly try to stay away from the shore, using their radio to calculate their position relative to Yūi. They soon come across another new species, a series of bats about half as tall as a human, skinny with opposable thumbs that look curiously on these metal contraptions.
[Redacted]
It seems they mostly evolved to be capable of flying on wind they themselves produce in concert, gliding and using their powerful legs and manuverable bodies. Peaceful herbivores, for the most part, though they are capable of eating meat. They also are capable of making a sonic wave that can completely disorient foes hit by it, and kill in some cases.
Kiken X- kinji rareta yamaAfter continuing onward, they come across a strange mountain. However, they are attacked by an X-REX, though they beat it back somewhat easily, if with injuries. It is seen retreating into the caverns, and most seem to think that the diverse ecosystem here means they have spotted one of the X-REX's homes. Further research would be needed, but they decide to retreat, moving carefully back to Yūi territory.
Atatakai rakuen no takiOn the other side, near the inner waters, Transverses have made their way to the edge of the Abyss. They also confirm the existance of a waterfall, water seeming to almost spill over. The currents here would likely send any ships trying to pass near this way to an Abyssal Grave.
A research post is set up for further studies of the area. And one of the first is the existence of some form of sonar-using colony. Somehow, something does live beneath the edge of the abyss, likely in a calm spot where the waters pass over the rocks.
Another discovery is the fact that these rocks are impossible to chip or melt, no matter our best efforts. Still, the existance of the Colony is enough to recieve more people setting up a town. The waters of the waterfall can be collected, and seem drinkable. And the land is more suited to farming than most of Yūi, warmer from the longer days and warmer waters.
Needless to say, some people are scratching their heads over how the Ecosystem stays together.
Meeting and DsicussionIn the city of Yūi, lights flicker, as the President among others speak of creating an expedition toward the Giant Orb Spider territories. Forests draped with sticky silk that almost glitters with sharp ice, most are saying a resounding no.The reasons are various, with the main argument being that without the Prototype to lead the way, it would be best to wait for the new Types to be produced.
After much talk, a plan is drafted to plot out the area of the Giant Orb Spider Territories, and they move on to discussing the movements and intercepted signals from Sujia territory and the Rayleigh Confederation. Foremost on their Rayliegh agenda is their treatment of the local wildlife and it's preservation. Already, it seems they have killed numerous Rocs and forced them into our territory and the most remote islands. Their numbers seem to have almost dropped off the map, and most speculate that they have moved to hypothesized lower islands in the Abyss.
Report on the Expedition to U~ōtāendo: Sea Creature LogCalled the Dark Crab, they appeared during the sunset and darkened the area around them. Not only that, but their shells were strong enough to render our bullets useless, and only the IRG managed to disrupt them. Thankfully, the people of Yūi still tend to carry their more personal weapons, and hammers and maces, along with tank and aggro draw, managed to break the shells with enough work, as well as the Prototype's own contributions.
They are rated in the same category as the Giant Orb Spiders. Do not camp near the Ocean, as they can deal enough force with their crab-hammer strikes to dent steel. Sizes vary from human-sized to tank sized, with the large ones making the area far darker and messing with eyesight. Please note that unlike the Giant Orb Spiders, there legs are bulky with spikes, and not a weakpoint that can be targeted by the heavy weapons needed. Joints appear to be inside the carapace shell.
Cultured TimesTime passes, and as it does, new things are gained. And yet some things are also lost in this time.
However, recent advances have led to the Network, and some people are putting their free time into recreating old shows fro the past, mostly anime, and translating them. Needless to say, a difficult project, and the question is this. Voice Actors, or computer generation.
Time will tell what new humans will grow up with. Though at the moment, that's mostly swords, shields, technology, and games. Games are at least something someone has managed to program for others to play.
Likewise, old stories are rewritten, and new stories come to be on the Network the connects Yūi together.
And so an old Culture is reignited, adding onto the Culture that has grown in these ten years, and that which is still remembered.
Celebrations of the Winter SolsticeAs a celebration of a Year gone by, and having achieved a comfortable life even amidst the snows, a plaza is cleared, and excavated trees rearranged and planted to surround it. Firewood is stacked high, and lit, and warmth comes to a festival filled with food, stories, and laughter. For the children born in these years, this is the first time they have seen such, other than old stories and tales.
Here, the losses of the past are honored and remembered, and a great sendoff for them. Likewise, some people give presents to others, and fireworks are launched.
Still, there are some who still need to stay on guard, but the nights of Yūi are long, and so everyone gets a turn for the Festival in the darkest part of winter. And the Aoi yoake are gathered carefully and used as ornaments, to show that we are here.
For all the joy and sadness however, it does not change the fact that next year, there will likely be people missing, to be honored. For war is on the horizon. Still, we shall preserve, as we always have in the face of adversity.
