Cage FB blob made of fire, no haul
« on: August 01, 2019, 09:13:49 pm »

I have a FB blob made of fire caged, is there any way to move it? My dwarves won't touch it, not even to walk by it, and so I can't haul it, dump it, or build it somewhere else. I know that this is a known issue, just wondering if someone had a workaround for it? I already tried turning off the temperature, didn't work. Really want to keep it, took a lot of work to catch that guy...

Sin is a joke compared to Lavos. Sin just flopped around and blew a couple of towns. Lavos exterminated the entire face of the earth and tore apart the fabric of space and time by simply existing.

Disabling temperature calculations doesn't change existing temperatures, it just prevents (calculation-heavy) temperature-averaging code.

With temperature calculations disabled, you could dig a ramp on the tile below the cage, removing the floor under the cage and dropping it into a tile that isn't injuriously hot. From there your dwarves will probably be able to access the cage and move it elsewhere (hot objects are treated differently from hot tiles, especially with temperature calculations disabled).

For a less-cheaty approach that doesn't require disabling temperature calculations, you could drop the cage into a tunnel and use water (or magma, if necessary) to push the cage into the desired location on the x/y plane, then drop the cage again into a final position. Note that wherever you put the cage will become inaccessible to dwarves (and may cause damage if they enter unintentionally), so a hallway, tavern, or barracks is not recommended.

An easier option is just to drop the cage a few z-levels and build whatever room you want around it. There isn't much practical use for a very hot beast anyway, so what difference does it make if your fire-shrine is in an odd corner of the fortress?

Thanks so much! Building the ramp was the way to do it! And yeah, I know it's a little cheaty, but I'm fine with it. I think like there should be a way to move the cage anyway, so I don't feel like its too much of an abuse. Also, I plan on making a menagerie, so I needed it to be mobile. Once it's where I want it, I'll turn the temperature back on.
