Woodcutters in the military
« on: October 27, 2018, 03:21:23 am »

So I had a migrant come in with Hammerdwarf and Woodcutter skills. I disabled Woodcutter and drafted him into the military. Now I'm realizing that despite not having an axe, he still won't pick up a hammer. Do I just give up and go with somebody else, or is there a way around this?

I'm not above using DFHack to erase his woodsy lore, if there's a way to do that.

Civilian "uniforms" (wood cutter, miner, hunter) clash with militia ones, leading to all kinds of issues due to bugs and design issues. The best is to probably to assign uniformed civilian jobs to dorfs who find development of martial arts distasteful. Another alternative is to disable the civilian job while on militia duty, and removal from the squad when on the civilian job, but then you have to decide whether a month of uniform changing is worth the cost of wearing armor.
Also note that when you sort of manage to get a dorf with a uniformed civilian job into a squad, the civilian tool weapon has to be distinct from the military weapon weapon.

I don't know that he ever had an axe, and I did disable the woodcutter skill. Also, it was, um, probably four years before I noticed he hadn't improved his hammer skill at all. When I put someone in the military, they stay there forever. So I'm not worried about switching back and forth, I'm worried about switching at all.

Check if he has a hand missing. Also if he has trained other things - like dodging, fighting, shield (is he carries a shield) and so on, and the only problem is the lack of weapon, or if there are problems with his training regimen.

Disabling mining, woodcutting and hunting should cause the soldiers to behave normally, so assuming all are disabled the problems lies elsewhere.

What is his uniform exactly? Does the hammer on his uniform have a green checkmark (on military screen > uniform tab > this dorf on the list)?

Does he have a shield? If he does, it is possible he's too small to wield a war hammer one-handed and, thus, won't pick it up with his hands already full. Rare, but happens.

- Do you have a free hammer for him to take?
- Is his squad active and/or have you made sure he's set to wear the uniform when off duty?
- Do you have barracks in which to train, and are those set to be used by his squad?

I expect the answer to be yes, but I've run out of probable causes not covered by others...
