Live training
« on: August 24, 2018, 02:26:30 pm »

I'm trying to give my marksdwarves live training, but it's not working.

Here's my setup:

Code: [Select]
+++F+++
+☺+F++t
++☺F+++
☺++F+t+
++☺F++t
+++F+++
(F = fortification, ☺ = dorf, t = troglodyte)

When I tell my dwarves to position themselves in the shooting area, none of them (even the ones right up against the fortification, and the elite marksdwarves) shoot the troglodytes. When I tell them to kill the troglodytes, they report that the target is unreachable. How do I get it to work?

I might as well ask the obvious questions.

Do the dwarves have quivers to hold ammo before firing?

Do the dwarves have ammo?

Do the dwarves have crossbow bolts as ammo?

Do the dwarves have bolts that are set to combat or combat/training in the squad ammo screen?

Do the dwarves have crossbows to fire their crossbow bolts from?

Military dwarves train up so quickly in this build that live training simply isn't needed. If you just let them hunt or use an archery range for half a year they'll have more than enough skills to defend the fort.

Marksdwarfs do not need a Kill order if you can Move them within shooting sight, so if you put them in that room using a Move order (or because it is a barracks room), that means they are on Active duty and they should fire. Check thefriendlyhacker's list, as ammo is the likely issue.

But it won't happen to me, my bit doesn't count etc etc... Just saying, after my recent experiences I couldn't trust the public if I wanted to. People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.

Just tried it again to get answers for thefriendlyhacker's questions and it worked. I'm going to assume there was a "no" in there somewhere. :/

Follow-up: Bolts were set to training only.

Maybe they're not strictly needed, but they're still quite useful. Consider that if your caverns entrance is properly protected with cage traps, your dwarves will be continually bringing up crundle and giant rat cages filling your animal stockpiles. You could atom smash them all I guess but that's a waste of meat and a cage. Since wild animals can't be slaughtered, you can't slaughter them without wasting the time of your animal trainers, who might be otherwise proccupied placating your dragons. The training route also can be micromanagement intensive, since there's no way to say "slaughter as soon as it's trained enough". If you don't have enough animal trainers, they can revert before you notice they're ready for slaughter. So it's an effective way to turn your Wild Giant Earthworm into a -giant earthworm meat roast- with the minimum amount of micromanagement, with a bonus to your training speed and military roleplay. I like to include at least rudimentary live fire rooms in my forts.
