Trees don't collapse?
« on: August 20, 2018, 04:06:45 pm »

I am trying to reclaim a cavern lake and am blocked by trees. So I tried channeling out the trees support from below by mining the tile directly below and then ramp up on the four supporting sides. The tree just floats there. Is there no way to remove a tree without chopping?!

I'm not 100% sure I'm reading the images right since I play without tilesets, but it looks like it should cave-in, so I'd chalk it up to a bug.

The screen shot doesn't show the next level above, but the tree isn't growing up to something that lends support, is it?  The wiki says that trees provide support, so it may work the other way around too.

I haven't tried that method, but there are known issues with channeling and trees on the surface, where DF doesn't actually remove the tree object and doesn't realize the (invisible) tree isn't supported until it grows, at which time it falls, generating a cave-in, but without actually removing it, causing periodic cave-ins.

However, there is a working method to get rid of trees in lakes: disintegrate them with ballista bolts. A tree hit by a ballista bolt will disintegrate (leaving no logs), and, when in water, will leave a hole in the water that isn't filled until waves are made (and those holes can actually trap creatures, possible ones that were once in the tree).
It's even possible to fire ballista bolts through water, although you obviously need to drain it so it won't reach the ballista operator.

Tree branches can support each other, and this can be rather dangerous after a fire, when you chop down one tree, and the logs from the supported one(s) hit the wood cutter.

Thanks for the suggestions, wish I'd known about the ballista thing earlier! I actually managed to clear the lake in the end (on like the 10th save scum trying to work out what the mechanics actually are) by ramping up along the entire edge and draining it enough to chop the trees, but it was scary for my miners.
