Efficient placement of caged preference animals?
« on: August 15, 2018, 11:32:26 am »

I find it pretty fun to try to collect things that many dwarves have preferences for. Though I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out how to best position caged animals to trigger the most happy thoughts.

At first I made a zoo. But for some reason hardly anyone went there and I also found out that dwarves have to be pretty close to a cage to get a thought from it. Having a large zoo with many animals may not have dwarves stand next to their favorite animal even if they are idling there.

I tried putting a cage in the dwarves quarters and setting them as the owner because I heard that makes it even better but they still didn't get any thoughts for some reason even as the passed right next to it to sleep.

What's the best place to put cages in order for dwarves to see them most often?

Not sure if the mechanics would be the same, but anytime I get a constructable artifact, I place them along main hallways or near the entrances to dining halls/taverns so dwarves path past them frequently.
