Concerning monster slayers and petitioning citizenship
« on: August 08, 2018, 12:49:12 am »

I've read on the wiki that mercenaries will never petition for citizenship. Does this apply to monster slayers as well? The earliest monster slayer that joined my fort was in the year 250 and it's already the new year of 253.

I believe Monster Slayers won't petition for citizenship. However, I don't accept them or mercs (and Monster Slayers are good only for cluttering the caverns with occasional critter corpse bits, followed by Monster Slayer bits, although it can provide some Visitite [A grown wooden sword! Yay!]).

Thanks for the info. Luckily I can expel all these human monster slayer free loaders and reserve my lavish prepared meals for the real hard workers.  :D

I wouldn't be so harsh to expel them, I have around 20 of Monster Slayers, and they just easily killed a Forgotten Beast made of sandstone with just some bronze spears. Quantity over quality I guess.

I just started playing after several years and these guys are one of the new features.

I'm one and a half year into this fort and I've already had 12-15 monster slayers petitioning to stay. Is this normal or is it going to stop at some point? It's not a big deal, but I can see this barrage of petitions getting annoying in the future.

I'm not sure about them. They all seem to have some training in military skills but, if I understand it correctly, it will be two years until they apply for real citizenship and I can use them in squads.
I don't have any plan to make the caverns accessible in the near future, so I could take them in and wait until they become full citizens. With the caverns closed, they won't cause any problems.
On the other hand, two years are more than enough to train a proper military, so I don't really see a valid reason to keep these freeloaders in the fort.

@Ai Shizuka: You don't understand it correctly...

Mercenaries will never petition for citizenship, but the will be available for all squad positions except squad leader (so you need to sacrifice a dorf for each suicide squad, if that was what you were aiming at).

Monster slayers, however, run down to caverns when you open them (if they're not "busy" socializing/praying/reading), chase after critters for a while, and then get hungry/thirsty to return back up (they don't seem to carry any provisions, and won't use local resources). Occasionally they'll manage to kill something, at which time your dorfs will run out into the cavern to pick up the bits, and frequently they will be reduced to bits by the local wild life, at which time your dorfs will run to pick up the bits...
Note that I don't like them, and so, the above is colored by that, but it's not untrue.

I'm pretty sure you can use citizen-confirmed performers as the squad leaders, if you don't consider those "your" dorfs.

What did I not understand correctly?
Never talked about mercenaries. I'm getting flooded by monster slayers petitioning for long-term residency.

I discovered the caverns but closed them immediately, so nobody is going there.
I'm just trying to decide if it's worth keeping all the monster slayers around until they apply for full citizenship (takes 2 years, according to the wiki) and I can use them in my military.

Monster slayers/hunters don't ever apply for citizenship, they only apply for residency.  And, once they are residents, you cannot control what they do, and can't even assign them to a military squad.

Does that clarify?

Ok thanks. No doubt about it in this case.
I don't see any reason to keep them around.

Well, their offspring will be full citizens, so if you have an exotic breeding pair might want to spent decade playing rabbit in a burrow to produce a squad.
