"No Migrant" Info

A fort can get seriously stuck when migrants refuse to show up. It would be nice if the message included some information on why they aren't coming. Is there not enough wealth? Are they scared because of deaths? Does it involve the distance to other sites for the civilization? Or is it a bug?

What way do you suggest getting the information to the player?
Magical message informing you of what's going on in the outside world wouldn't work.

Perhaps messengers? But again, if the mountainhomes are under siege, would a messenger be able to get out to tell you?

Messenger moles travelling through the tunnels maybe. Something for Deep Dwarves to do, perhaps? Would they bother with your site at all though rather than one of the hundreds of other important sites in the civ (assuming messengers are in limited supply and doom is imminent).

Lots of ways this issue could be resolved. But "Random telepathic message for the sake is the player" probably isn't the route Toady will choose.

Building off of that: Maybe a citizen could be permanently sent to the mountain home or wherever migrants come from, thus enabling the announcements with the framing device of your dorf writing back home. The level of detail and accuracy in the report will reflect certain skills he had, and a particularly unskilled dorf in the role may result in not only vague or misleading messages ("They say they don't want to come because of the...cabbages? I guess?") but also a slight risk of offending his hosts so badly that he ends up being sent home. With a hostile army following.

Either it could be that your fort sends a messenger to ask why the annual migrants haven't arrived.
Or the message could be sent with the annual trade caravan.

Maybe they find out the same way that the migrants find out that people have died at your fort. Word gets around. Visitors and merchants have loose tongues.

I think if you relied on the rumour system, the message would be just as hidden as it is today. Yeah, you coud figure out that the mouintainhome has been atacked several times over the past year so that's probably why migrants aren't coming.

You'd have to work out for yourself if they weren't coming due to being scared of your deathtrap fortress though.

As you say, the player sometimes just wants concrete information. Send a messenger, "anyone coming this summer? ", "Hell no!". Nice and clear.

(Or maybe, "yeah, we sent out 50 peasants last Spring. Didn't they arrive? ". Then you need to worry and start paying closer attention to rumours).
