im aware I can use pumps to clean water, but how do I get a steady supply without a river? im not a huge fan of not having a hospital but need water to get one going (even though my last fort died because I had a good hospital, those werebeast bites can spread like wildfire when the military isn't looking)

There's almost always fresh water in the caverns, unless you're really unlucky or changed some world gen settings.

From the surface: If your embark is not too hot, gets rain, and you have surface ponds, you can use a pump to drain them partially then wait for rain to refill them.

From the caverns: If one of the caverns has water, you can have a bucket brigade fill a 6 or 8 tile aquifer for your hospital's well (be sure to seal the cavern entry points after, as FBs move fast).

If there was an aquifer on your embark, dig in...

There is something to be said about, if the stakes are as high, maybe reconsider your certitudes. One has to be aggressively allistic to feel entitled to be able to trust. But it won't happen to me, my bit doesn't count etc etc... Just saying, after my recent experiences I couldn't trust the public if I wanted to. People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.
