Third-Person "They" For [CAN_LEARN] Asexual castes?
« on: June 27, 2018, 01:15:05 pm »

I think it would be good to have third-person they pronouns for [CAN_LEARN] or civilized creatures.  Why?  Well, I can only imagine a non-binary person wanting to mod in a non-gendered adventurer/species/etc. but be upset that "it" is currently used for all asexual creatures.  Why "they"?  It'd be the simplest option without enraging more conservative DF players and Toady not having to mod in, say, a [PRONOUN] caste tag for "xe", "ze", and all those odd new pronouns.

Seems like a nice and relatively simple idea, that would make sense for some existing asexual and hermaphroditic animal people as well (e.g. snail people, sponge people).

While we're at it, why not add [MALE_INFERTILE] and [FEMALE_INFERTILE] tags for using correct pronouns for infertile castes that are still supposed to be gendered, i.e. ant people workers and soldiers?

Those would make some pretty great tags!

Or maybe "It" for nonliving asexual things, since "he" and "she" are used for living animals without CAN_LEARN. "They" would be used for living asexual things with and without CAN_LEARN.

Infertile gendered castes are already handled with the STERILE tag.  Ants and ant people use this.

When I read this I was sure you were right and I had missed something, but then I couldn't find it in the raws, nor in the wiki's list of creature tokens. There is a note saying "Female, but non-breeding (most of the time)." in the raws, however.

A separate STERILE tag would work as good as my initial suggestion, with the bonus of being able to be added easily by syndromes and such, so I'm all for it. I guess it opens the question as to whether sterile creatures should marry/have romances or not, so maybe a NO_ROMANCE tag would be needed to close off that option where relevant (e.g. Ant Workers).

I suppose the reason we don't have hermaphroditic creatures is due to complications with orientation code.

STERILE is usable with CE_ADD_TAG but not anywhere else.

Can't really see that, since orientation code seems rather simple anyway.

Especially considering snail people came first.

I know I'm a little late on this, but y'all are thinking of agender, not asexual. asexual means you don't feel sexual attraction, while agender means you don't identify with any gender.

I think I heard "asexual" being used in both contexts.

i've mostly only heard asexual used in the former context in the LGBTQ+ subculture and in human contexts in general while the latter is mostly used in a biological sense
