Can Dwarfs attack diagonally?
« on: June 17, 2018, 12:00:44 am »

The reason I ask is that I just built this battle maze on the ground floor of my new obsidian mountain fortress that sits in front of a volcano. I was able to pipe magma into the fortress for the smiths and smelters and to eventually turn into nasty traps in the battle maze and to stock my battle maze with traps. But the question I have was about dwarfs attacking diagonally in regards to a 1 tile vs 3 tile T-junction.

Can I station 3 soldiers at the end of a T-junction and hold them there with a burrow or something so they stay there and just hold those three tiles against the one invader able to come at a time up the hall?

Yes, like in adventure mode.

They can attack diagonally just fine. A dwarf can be facing any direction in a 3x3x3 area around it, melee combat can occur to and from any space within that cube. You might have some problems getting your military dwarves to go to and stay at your designated spots. Active duty military ignores burrows and they love to charge the enemy when they get in range of their stationed position. If you can prevent this it should work. You might want to consider giving your military more room to work with than three spaces though or else they'll probably be tripping over each other when they try and dodge and that can cause problems.

Defend Burrow works well for holding military dorfs in place, with Station they explicitly run off and chase whatever they see, same for Patrol.

If you put the square they can reach on a corner itself, you should stop any shooters targeting your defenders from out of range.

Trick for letting dorfs dodge is to build a row of statues behind them, they won't ever wait on a statue square, but can dodge back into the square with a statue quite harmlessly and then just walk back into their preferred open space again. Include it all in the burrow you're defending.

Things like that tend to go bad eventually, but such is the !!Fun!! of Dorftress. :)

After seven years of playing this game I didn't even know that. Dwarf Fortress, no matter how well you think you understand it, there's always more to learn.

Would fortifications work, too? Statues are vulnerable to building destroyers.

I'd consider it an advantage if trolls would attack the statues rather than the dorfs...

I don't think they will. They'd do it while your dwarves aren't around for some reason, or due to non-hostile bugs. Dragonfire is also a problem, as well as tantruming dwarves.

I think dorfs or anything else can only be knocked into a fortification, they won't dodge there, and there used to be a few stuck creatures result. Stone statues are easy to produce, and shouldn't melt if you make them out of gabbro or whatever else.

I use it a bit for shooting galleries in mean embarks, keeps all the archers up by the fortifications and they only ever dodge into the statues behind.

No material is safe. Lost a bunch of ☼steel spikes☼ to fire Clowns.
