Is it even possible to play in a reanimating biome?
« on: June 02, 2018, 12:00:48 pm »

Less than 25% of the embark tiles were in a sinister biome, but apparently that is enough for whole region reanimation.

I am curious how feasible it is to really get anything solid going in these areas? I am constantly being attacked by undead seabirds, river otters, horseshoe crabs. However I was able to deal with them alright. In fact I have a smoothed stone dry moat around my surface fort that is where I dump bodies so anyone that try to climb or falls in has to deal with the pitted undead. That's kind of cool, but the problem is siege cleanup. It's summer year 3 and I've been attacked three times. First by Dwarfs and then by Elves (not at war with any civs, so I guess raiders?)  and then finally a rather sizable force of Goblins. Cleanup of the battlefield after is just impossible. Some random body part is constantly reanimating. Even if I leave my military out there to protect the civilians, nothing really gets collected because of insane cancellation spam. I can't even pick up gear, let alone pick up bodies and carry them to the dumping site. The constant attacks are making it very difficult to get anything done.

As a additional difficulty, all the rotting bodies and undead are making it next to impossible to keep morale up.

It's a shame because I really like the site and I have have magma forges, river/ocean sections for fishing, and more iron, steel, and silver than I can use.

I guess that's just how it is, but does anyone have any experience that may make this easier?

Yes, yes it's very possible.

Do not kill anything. Bring tons of seeds, a good amount of wood, extra drink and good, tunnel underground and lock yourself in. Leave the pulling animals above ground, they're liabilities. Begin farming, and digging and making everything you need for survival. Once you find some metal you should be good.

If you have magma forges, then you can flood the surface with magma.

Yeah, I guess, if I wanted to go full nuclear on survival. I like having to deal with sieges and such to keep me on my toes. I should have mentioned that.

I suppose I'll restart somewhere else.

Well, if you want the excitement but it's too much for you you might want to adjust your approach. As mentioned, turtling works quite well as long as you're able to get your initial supplies into safety.

If you don't get too many sieges you should be able to clear out the generated undead eventually, in particular if you're prepared to turtle and use cage traps to mop up reanimated pieces when it gets too much, but migrating groups of undead will of course keep you on your toes (and should do so: if you don't want that you shouldn't embark in a reanimating biome). You can adjust your approach to the situation, and you can also cut down on the invasion force sizes if you want to ("permanently" or as a temporary respite to give you room for cleaning things up).
You could also slaughter invaders in killing zones "inside" your fortress where you can close them off to contain the reanimating parts while your militia rekills them until they stop reanimating. If the area(s) are closed off to the outside you can then clean them up without interruption from undead "wildlife", although that might make things too easy for you.

In my view it's a sign of balance that maximizing the threat level actually results in a difficult struggle if you try to meet it head on, and I wouldn't complain if such an approach was near impossible.

Cancellation spam can be dealt with using d-b-f and d-b-c, although it's a pain to do that constantly.

I'm doing a reanimating biome and loving it. The only real drawback is that butchering is always a pain because the skin and hair will reanimate and interrupt workflow.

Equip your dwarves with silver maces. Everyone should be fully armored and at least partially trained. I used 85% maces and 15% axes. Don't waste time on markdwarves. Fully armored dwarves are pretty much impervious to smaller undead. Only the miners and woodcutters should run around unarmored and vulnerable, because they must.

Outdoor battles are best. Indoor battles produce miasma while you're waiting for all the reanimation to finish. When faced with a battlefield of corpses and body parts, remember that you can use the stocks menu to see how many un-mangled parts are still sitting out there.

Once you have the surface cleared, build atom smashers near likely battlefields. After the battle, camp a squad on the corpses and wait a week or two while they reanimate. Once they're almost all mangled, start unforbidding the body parts to summon the civilians to carry them to the smasher.

Cavern control is a priority. You probably have hundreds of undead crawling around down there, draining your FPS and occasionally spamming your combat reports. Kill them, atom-smash them, and control the edges.

If you haven't built a fully protected trade caravan tunnel, build one. Caravan guards and visitors will get killed bringing spears and crossbows into your reanimating biome, and you have to clean up the mess. I quickly turned off all visitors, because they're mostly just book-stealing FPS parasites.

44.10 is broken regarding stress, even before you get cascades of horror and vengeance from reanimation. Until we get 44.11, DFHack's remove-stress is essential to avoiding fortress-wide madness. You can also use this thread to build a stress-resistant squad to camp the battlefield until everything reanimates and gets mangled.
