dwarves taking apart unusable clothes?
« on: August 31, 2010, 03:30:59 pm »

I was playing a modded version of DF, and my furnace operator spotted a kobold thief. i had him wrestle the kobold while my military mobilized to finish it off.
After said thief was vanquished, my dwarves hauled his body and his tunic to the refuse pile. When the dwarf dumped it there, the clothing immediately turned to 2 units of forbidden cloth. is this supposed to happen, like a feature?

I've never had that happen before... I mean, I've not been playing intensively for long, I think I got big time into DF about three months ago, so I'm not a pro, and have maybe seen 1/1000 of the stuff that can happen in this game.

Anything's possible in DF! lol.

Anything's possible in DF with magma! lol.

Fixed that for you.

I've always been a proponent of enhanced dwarf recycling, including cloth, wood, metal and leather reclamation.  Unfortunately, to my knowledge there's no current mechanism for converting finished cloth goods into usable cloth as you describe.  Either one of your mods has it as a totally sweet feature or that kobold had some cloth in his inventory when he died or something.

To my knowledge, this is impossible. Sounds like a bug, though I can't say that definitively.

I too am annoyed by the lack of recycling.  Why can't dwarves at least detach the gems from some trinket they're about to melt down for steel?  Why can't worn clothing be patched?  Why can't I turn those hundreds of cedar breastplates and maple gauntlets that the elves bring into charcoal?  Why is it impossible to clean out a barrel full of blood and put booze in it!?

Edit: apparently it is possible by forbidding the contents and moving the barrel..

Well i wasn't using any kobold or civ related mods, and the clothing that it had disapeared into my refuse, splitting into cloth, but i don't know how.

I suspect your dwarf caught him on the way out with his pockets full of cloth. Does the cloth have parentheses around it?

actually, one of my haulers found him empty handed on the hills where i quickly drafted him to wrestle it to the floor and had the thief slashed to death by his pet. the cloth that apeared in my refuse had both {} and () around it.
